Does anyone make a starter for a '58? Either a new, rebuilt or some type of aftermarket starter for the 392?

Ive seen the ones available through Summit. I just want to make sure there aren't any issues with clearance or whatever using an aftermarket starter.

I do have the original... it still works, but is getting a little slow. Personally, I think I would rather just get a new one, as this car will be a driver anyway.

Just my opinion but I would rather have the original rebuilt by a reputable shop and never touch it again as opposed to buying some after market starter.
After a proper rebuild, if it was needed, I have never had an original starter fail.

Have you checked you cables and cleaned both ends?
If you have replacement battery cable ends, get rid of them.
I always pull the starter and wire wheel the mounting surface of the starter and bell housing as well as the starter bolts.

I do have a replacement cable end on the positive cable. Does anyone make a good, proper positive cable for a '58?

You can have a proper gauge cable made up at a shop the services semi-trucks. If I was having a cable made I'd go one gauge heavier than factory.
You can also go to a good parts store or something like an Interstate Battery and buy new cable ends that come with a solder plug that only requires a propane torch to solder to the cable.
