1964 New Yorker - Didn't need it, but here we are...

Hey guys, after a 4 year hiatus from Mopars, Im back. I had a '77 Newport I Sold to a friend's dad. He loves it and still has it.

In the interim, I've had a '72 Thunderbird, '73 Grand Marquis, '71 Ambassador Wagon, '76 Regal Coupe, '79 Corvette come and go, in addition to my '99 Saturn SW2 wagon and 2003 Crown Victoria Sport that are my "drivers", well the Vic doesn't see salt, but anyways, and still have my '75 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight.

Now that all that, that absolutely no one cares about has been addressed, let's get back to the Chrysler. Picked up this 64 for a great deal I think, after the seller had been sitting on it a while, on Monday. Yesterday? Yeah I think. Who knows.

Anyways, went up to Union Grove Wisconsin Saturday with my airhead brother (that'll be apparent in a couple seconds here) to look at it. As we're going past Great America on the Tri State he goes "hey what time is the bank open until". Now the idea was since he uses Chase he'd stop at one of the 500 branches vs my credit union that isn't open on Saturday.

Well Nick, Chase is absolutely not open at 4 PM on a Saturday. Sigh. Anyways we went, looked at and liked the car. Left a deposit and came back yesterday to take it home.

Car is a 93k mile Colorado car that was owned by the original family after the owners passed away about 20 years ago. Beautiful body and underside, no rust to speak of. 413 runs excellent, AC works! Original hubcaps are in the trunk.

Started today on some paint correction.

Used my harbor Freight DA and a assortment of pads and Meguairs and 3D One compounds. Coming along nicely and it's taking care of the oxidation.

It really was. The asking price was probably optimistic, but I figured it was worth the drive to see if he'd want to play ball.

I'm sure a lack of "desirability" probably played a part too.

Now in the "fun" part of the paint correction stages. Using Meguairs#7 by hand to really get a good soak of the oils into the paint. Helps it pop, and since it's 61 years old and dry, it needs it.

Thunderstorming this afternoon so I'm stuck working in the garage which is a comfortable 90 something. Delicious

Also threw a '64 Illinois plate on it. Makes it look more "right" lol.

Don't think I have seen a Chrysler of this vintage ('63-'64) in this color - very attractive. I'm always saying that the way to remove the impoverished look associated with poverty caps is to 1.) have the wheel color match the body, 2.) add trim rings, and 3.) put a proper set of white walls (the narrow ones you have set it off perfectly). Thus, it actually works (and works well) on this New Yorker, which I'd otherwise not want them on. Hard to complain about a well running 413 and working factory AC - nice score. Congrats and it's nice see this one find a good home.

As far as reviving the original finish goes, work in stages, use the most gentle method, and see how it goes. Treat the old paint like old leather. I use Meguiar's #7 as a moisturizer, and give the original paint on my New Yorker an annual re-hydration treatment. Use a liberal amount, and leave it on for a few days. Kinda messy to remove, but the results are worth it. Others here may have better advice than I do.

I'm doing the #7 soak again (2nd round) on the hood/trunk/roof now. I saw Mike Phillips post about it probably 10 or 15 years ago on AutoGeek. Going well so far.

I do like the cap/painted wheel combo more than I thought I would!

Thanks, it's cleaning up pretty well. Super solid car so I'm happy.

Done with the compounding and polishing. Still needs to be waxed/sealed but that'll be for tomorrow. Washed all the compound and stuff off the car and the crevices, then of course had to take a drive! Pictures are not great it was getting dark

Also scored a bunch of old car cleaning stuff, a lawn chair, and some bug spray from a neighbors trash lol. Looks cool on the shelf, I tell myself

What a sweetie! I gotta say that the Dodge poverty caps are no bueno on a top end Chrysler. The Chrysler wheelcovers are a must in my opinion.

Hi George: Very nice NY in Roman Red Metallic--like ours. I would really like to receive a picture of this car's Fender Tag so I could prepare a decode report for it. I want to see how the tag reports the roof crown molding--not a common piece of trim unless the car is two-toned or equipped with a vinyl top as with a Salon. No charge, ever. VIN would help but not critical. Pretty sure it starts with 8343. Sample below.

Finally some actual full sun pictures. I think it came out well for 61 years and who knows what along the way! Me and my daughter waxed it this morning while it was storming out. Gave us something to do lol.

Still have to polish the bumpers and trim and then get to the interior, but for now my daughter and myself have ice cream to go get.

Thank you for posting. I had to tweak my decoder. The 9 under the T in PNT clearly depicts the Roof Crown Molding that comes with vinyl or two-tone roof--without either. So, I struggle to find an order code for this as I have an order code 635 for that molding. Under the T is otherwise the color of a convertible top. I trust there is no indication of the car ever having a black or white vinyl roof.

So got some interior cleaning done! Did the back of the car today. Front will come later this week I hope.


Anyways, I started by pulling the rear seat bottom, found some cool old stuff, a Rapid City SD tourist brochure and Souix Indian Museum guide, and a little Indian figurine. Neat! Some wheat pennies from the 50s too.

Next we vacuumed the carpet then used my Bissel Little Green Machine to clean the carpets. Smells a lot better too!

Did the door panels and vinyl seating areas which were filthy, they cleaned up really nice. No rips or tears or anything. I don't think many people sat in back.
