1966 Fury III - Unfinished Project

Got this panel shaped up pretty much correct now.

Ran out of time and energy today.

Chop chop. Need to cut the bottom of the wheel well off and rebuild the shape. Then I can put the panel in. Quarter needs straightening slightly too.

Phil

Bought some more steel tonight.
The weather gods apparently got the memo this is a long weekend.

That's a wonderful forecast. Ugh.

Phil

More removal than addition today, trying to get back to the original shape of the metal, after Bodyshop Buddy Boy made a dog's breakfast of it.

Found the original shape of the meeting face of the floor.

Made a bunch of mess. Got rained on. Need grinding and cutting wheels now.
20230902_094250.jpg

Just needs a couple small pieces letting in. Most of the missing metal is from the bodyshop grinding, cutting and welding.

Phil

That put paid to today.
Went get cutting discs and paint and stuff.

There's the rain we were forecast.
20230902_111901.jpg

Wait. Quarter mile down the road there's no sign of any rain at all.

Needless to say that all blew north and ended up over the house here so I think I'm done for now.

A few small pieces of metal.

Slowly coming together. Ran out of time tonight but that's the beginning of a plinth for the hood ornament.

Phil

The original emblem seems to have some impurities in the metal because it all broke up and fell apart the first time I shut the hood.

Back to square one.

Not sure I understand - were you attempting to braize/weld the emblem to the new plinth? Emblem is pot metal, so incompatible that way as far as I know.

Can't find a good used one? I would be surprised that you couldn't find a plinth from somewhere...

DVAP shows a few 66 Furies that likely have the plinth, even if the emblem has been busted off...

So easy to remove from a hood - shouldn't cost an arm and a leg...

eBay has come through already.

No, drilling up the center of the emblem, inserting a metal rod for strength then the same into an old bolt to give it a leg.
The emblem fractured like shortcrust pastry, it's not very pure. Thinking that's probably the reason for it breaking to begin with.

DVAP is good but I would prefer making a trip out there; it's an 18 hour drive from here though.

Well worth the trip, Phil. Just don't go any time between April and October.

Well, back to things I can fix.

More CAD in action.
Amusingly, the factory body line stamping is about ½" longer on the driver's side than the passenger side.
You cannot see both at the same time so I'm ok with that.

Phil

Found a few spare minutes of daylight.
20230905_192513.jpg

Cut the panel out.

Folded the lower lip return. Now it just needs profiling correctly; once that's done I can add the arch lip return. Getting somewhere now.

Phil

Okay. I'm confused by this carburetor.

The stock BBD needs gaskets and an overhaul, and was leaking quite badly.
The car came with a Holley intake and a 650cfm vacuum secondary carb, which I had put a rebuild kit into a couple years back.

I decided to put that on today, hooked up to the stock engine pump that had been running the Carter fine.

It pumped up and started gushng fuel out of all the primaries. I checked the first levels and they're set up sensible.
I pulled the primary bowl off, plugged the secondary feed, held the float up and it shut the fuel off on crank, making about 5psi.

I pulled the meeting block off and tested the power valve, which isn't split and holds vacuum.

Anybody else had this weird issue with a Holley before?

Sure, plenty of faulty new needle/seats on Holly stuff.
Fingering testing is one thing, holding 4 to 7 psi on the float when running is another thing.
