Would be real curious to see what they used for the rest of the drive train. The rpm range on that diesel is pretty short.

The only thing that really can be seen are the letters D4D on housing cover. The D4D is a Toyota common rail injection type engine that uses a turbo.. They used it extensively in their diesel pickups. The ones sold here were six cylinders, the Asian models were 4 cylinders.

More BTUs in diesel compared to gasoline, more compression in a diesel, turbo allows you to back down the mechanical compression and advance the timing to help drivability and then when manifold pressure comes up timing can back off for max power. ECU control of the timing events and variable turbos will make you never want a gas motor in anything bigger than a Duster but practicalities step in.
