2010 Charger Cop Car Questions

I made the mistake of stopping to look at a Charger police car for sale, it must have been the spotlight! Anyways, it's got 125,000 miles but looks pretty good. The cops around here don't get too much excitement, so I don't think it get too abused. I can also asked Laura's daughter to ask the cops in my town what they know, a the cops know each other, and have worked together as they shuffle between the various departments.

What are common issues with these cop cars? I haven't found out what engine it has, no one answered the phone. I'm hoping it's the Hemi. I'm familiar with the valve issue @Dobalovr mentioned I'm a different thread.

It has no console, that would need to be sourced, don't care about a better radio, it has tires and wheels, so that's good.

Not sure if there's anything else to look at other than a standard going over, but if you have any suggestions, they would be appreciated. I supposedly can sell my Avenger for around the same price of the cop car, $3,000 and would do so if the Charger checks out.

They use many Chargers as police vehicles in North Jersey. I have never seen one with a Hemi, they all use V-6 engines because of the lack of high speed chases and mostly use them to cruise around the neighborhoods, and they get slightly better gas mileage.

The cops usually take pretty good care of their cars. It probably has received all the scheduled maintenance it required and was likely to have been dealer-serviced. The only big thing I think you should check for is RUST. Being a MN car, that would be a likely problem.

I bought a '95 Caprice 9C1 / LT1 back in 2005 with 95K on the clock. Was a former NJ Turnpike admin car. Other than needing a new fuel pump, I have never had a problem with it Its got 180K on the clock now.

If you really want a former cop car, you might wanna take a look at southern cars. . .

They keep them pretty darn clean in winter, but I hear ya. That's why I will ask Laura's daughter to ask the cops, so I can get the truth, or some of it, from them. I don't need this, but would swap my car if it's clean, so I have no desire to go out of state.

The 2005-2009 Dodge 5.7 engines had a problem with the valve seats becoming detached. There was a redesign in 2010 that appears to have solved this problem. The valve seats would work loose from the head and prevent the valve from closing. Sometimes this resulted in the valve breaking off and destroying the engine. The later engines have a tighter press fit on the valve seats which keeps them from coming loose.

If you can get the service records for your prospective purchase, that would tell you a lot about how well the cruiser was maintained and what repairs were done to it. Do the usual due diligence and check for burnt transmission oil and coolant in engine oil. Over all, these later cruisers have proven to be highly rugged and reliable units.

Intake gaskets leak on early hemis, easy fix and replacements are of a different design.

An 8-9 year old car being sold directly through the police Dept? I think that's better than if they sold it at auction. They got their monies worth out if that car.

The municipality probably has policy that allows some discretion in transactions under $5k or so. This would never fly in a bigger city, (too much opportunity for graft) but in a small town it's probably cost effective.

If you could hold out for an '11, they're much nicer cars.

They don't pop up for sale locally by the fuzz very often. I asked the sheriff what they were going to do with their Charger, 2011+, and he told me to go to MnBid.com and make a bid. Too many dealers that just buy cop cars with deeper pockets than me. My Avenger is paid for, thanks to the recent hail storm, so I don't want to drop a lot of money. But I want to get a different car before it needs bigger repairs. I saw it and checked it out on an impulse.

I read the follow-up replys as if they were still saying the car was still owned by the Municipality. I may have been wrong.

No, it is still owned by the police department. The two lane highway isnin the edge of the town, and the police station is half a mile off that road, much more advertising on the highway than on Main Street.
