Hey guys,

I have a 67 Polara with a 46 RH automatic trans. Looking for information on a new replacement shifter gate that can replace the 3 speed shifter gate on stock, console shifted 727 to the 46 RH 4 speed automatic transmission, I know I saw it somewhere, I think on a TV show but its been a while and I dont remember where they said to get it. You had to grind off the rivets on the old gate, and just pin the new one in its place and it has the extra notch for the 4 speed automatic. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks Keith

In reality, there are TWO gates. One is the "rooster comb" in the transmission, which has a spring-loaded ball bearing that verifies the detents there. The otner one is on the "top side", in the steering column or console shifter mechanism.

Might it be possible to use the lower one as a guide, then mark the locations on a piece of "whatever" for the console, as each lower detent is engaged? Then, using the depths of the orig gate, make a new one for each of the new gear positions. Then make a new shift quadrant plate for the console?

Of course, much better if all of this could be purchased "ready-made", but if not, there can be ways to still do it.

Just some speculations,

Thanks for your thoughts...... I already have done something similar to that and I am currently driving the car, I was just searching for the 4 speed shift gate that I had seen in the past. I was hoping someone here had seen this and knew where to get one. My shift gates were already worn down before I started so thats another reason for looking for a new one just to have nice sharp steps for each detent to land in. Hopefully someone will chime in with some info, Thanks again for your input, You have always been very helpful in the past!!

One obvious place to look would be cars which came with 3+OD automatic consoles.

I don’t understand what you’re asking. The 46 rh and 518 only have 6 positions just like the 727 or 904. Both are P,R,N,D,2,1 the difference is the D position is 3rd and 4th for the 46 as 4th is electronically controlled by a solenoid in the valve body the lock up converter is also controlled by a solenoid.

I put a 518 in a 63 Plymouth behind a 440 using an Ultabell bell housing. I used a normal 3 speed shifter and used two toggle switches to control OD and torque converter lock up. The connection on the 518 and 46rh has 3 pins 1st wire is overdrive ground middle wire is 12 volts key on 3 wire is lock up ground.

Also confused as there's no mechanical position for OD on this transmission.
I will tell you on my 70 that the OEM console shifter down tube interfered with the trans. I used my OEM shifter attached to a b&m cable kit for the connection to the trans.
