64 New Yorker lighting issues

I’ve been having issues with the front running/turn signal lights in the bumper. They come on with the the light switch but when I turn the headlights on, they go out. The turn signals still function though. Issues with the headlamp switch or a bad ground?

My suspicion is that there’s a ground issue. I had a problem with the driver’s side turn signal on the front of Shamu, my 69 Fury III vert. Turned out that it was the lamp housing to the metal turn signal shell on the front. I secured the two pieces together and the issue was corrected.

All Mopars right up until 1969 the park lamps go out when headlights are turned on.
Its not broken so dont fix it, LOL!

Shamu and Frankie both 69's have the park lamps stay on with headlights.
68 and older did not.

This is as it should be. Parking lights didn't turn on with the headlights until later years.

Not necessarily... One of the differences between the '64 and '65 Barracuda is the parking lights come on with the lights on the '65 models. This fact seems to be pretty well documented.

This one is my '65.

From what I seem to be able to figure out, there's not any set year for the change. I was really curious about this and there's a ton of conflicting info out there... So I can't say what is the truth.

So why would some 1965 models have them and others not until 1969? That would be the mystery... I'm wondering if it's single v. dual headlights. I don't think it's the reason that some give of a Fed requirement with side markers in 1968.

I do remember my Dad wiring one his '68 300 so the parking lights came on with the headlights. I don't remember how exactly he did it... A couple ways come to mind. Either a jumper with a diode on the switch or just wiring them into the tail light wiring.

One can have the parking lights come on when the headlights are on by inserting a diode from the headlights to each parking light. I have done this to my 65 Mustang.

I think that change was 68 due to the addition of side marker lights being fed off the parking lamps. However, I always wondered how Chrysler got away with reflectors instead of lights on the 69 MY.

I agree, when headlights come on, parking lamps go out. This is exactly the way it's supposed to work. There was a grace period of a year or two when they could just affix reflectors to vehicles that didn't come with side marker lights. My grandfather's '68 A100 had them.

Trucks and vans got real working sidemarkers in 1970 when the Feds clamped down on Chrysler for using reflectors.
