I am running 205 75 R14 tires on my 69 Monaco, which I believe is the stock size for the car.
I would like to go with a slightly wider and lower profile tire with a larger diameter rim. There looks like there is lots of room in the wheel wells, but, does anyone have any experience with using a larger tire on your C Body and what would you recommend as the upper limit?

Check out the specs for 1969 in the Library of www.hamtramck-historical.com for USA-spec cars.

For USA-spec cars, starting in '69, I believe that that was when they went to 15" wheels as standard equipment on C-bodies, drum and disc brake cars alike? Prior to 1969, only the factory power disc brake cars had 15" wheels/tires. My '70 Monaco came with H78-15 tires, double-stripe whitewall Firestones. Typical sizes would be P215/75-15 (G78-15/8.25x15) or P225/75R-15 (H78-15/8.55x15) and a L78-15 size P235/75R-15 on the wagons with lots of options.

I believe there are a few 1969 or 1970 Polara/Monaco Canadian-market sales brochures online somewhere? Sometimes, there were some different specs/uses for USA and Canadian vehicles, even if they were the same basic car.

Take care,

My experience is that tires with a 28" diameter work. 235-70R15 is a nice size all around. 275 tires may fit in the back, especially with your narrow 1969 axle.

I agree that 14" rim/tires don't sound right on a 1969 car. They won't work if you convert to factory front disc brakes: 1969-72 or 1973 types

Look here for some ideas.

On my 69 Fury III I have in front 235/70/15 on 15 /7 inch wheels and the rear 275/60/15 on 15/8 wheels with 4 1/2 back spacing. Both front and back tires have a 28 inch diameter.

Do a search in this thread. Plenty of tire and wheel option discussions.

I recall shopping for tires for my Polara and Monaco and 235/75/15 tires had a heavy duty rating when compared to smaller tires. I have that size with white side lines on both my cars for the factory look.

If you look at the rear side of the 69 polara/monaco you will see the tires are standing close to each other , they used the e-body axle , that,s why you better go with 4 inch back space , better handling and looks better. From 1970 they used a wider axle.....

I was aware of the wider axles being used from 1970. But this was just the case for Dodge, other brands have a wider axles from the beginning? If yes, I did not now.

I purchased the car with original wheels and found on this forum the recommended size of wheels 15x8 with 4,5inch backspace for 275 in the back, so I went ahead. If will be changing the wheels in the future, I will keep 4inch backspace in mind
