Angle bar extensions on rear shock mounts

Does anybody know what the purpose of this angle bar extension is? They're located on both sides on my 71 Suburban. Rear sway bar?

It appears as if it were for a "weight transfer" trailer hitch. I think the holes are too far in for a sway bar but just perfect for a hitch. Keep them, who knows what future purpose they will serve.
