i just dropped the fuel tank on my 1968 Fury. Hanging partially down is a pad that was between the top of the tank and the trunk.

The only asbestos I have seen is the tape style used on HVAC ducts. So, I’m curious if it is. I’m thinking near a fuel tank and made in 1968 there is a chance it is.

The pad is almost fallen down, so I wonder if I should find out how to dispose of it, if it’s asbestos, or try and reattach it.

If it is in good shape, reuse it as the original pad is likely to be more durable than anything that has been made since to replace it. You can duct tape it back into place. Most of the replacement pads are made from something resembling roofing tar paper.

It sure helped keep the top of the fuel tank clean. It’s still shiny, clean metal. The bottom not so much.

I will reattach it tomorrow while I am undercoating and cleaning off rust, but I am going to wear a mask.

very good idea. also a spray bottle with water will keep any dust in check if you suspect it is asbestos.
