big block oil filters

Oh its good oil, 4 sure! I like 10W-30 viscosity as my General Purpose one also. FoMoCo just puts in a little more zinc these days. For the HOT Season here, I run Havoline 10W-40 with 2 fl oz of Lucas' break-in ZnDDP added in. The Pleasant Season warrants 10W-30, supplemented w the same amount of zinc. It's getting difficult to purchase old fashioned petroleum motor oil now, but so long as I'm running an older built engine, I'll use the stuff all the seals and RTV it was assembled with were assumed to be sealing. Upon completing a NEW build, which, God-willing should be 24-36 months from now, I'll run synthetic oil, still supplemented as I mean to retain flat tappets for now, barring unexpected income increase.
Cost-wise, how does the current $9.96/qt price for Valvoline VR-1 (10W-30 or 20W-50) syn compare to the price of your mixes? high zddp without the extra labor involved, to me.

Just curious,

I was buying Havoline in 6 quart boxes for $20 plus tax via Sprawlmart, which comes to $3.34/qt + Lucas ZDDP additive, which runs about $12-16 / 16 fl oz. Use 2 fl oz per oil change. So, at say, $1/fl oz, that's $2 per oil change, + 5 * $3.34 = $(2 + 16.67) = $18.67. So, I change my oil for less than 2 qts of VR1, which I've used as a crank case topper mostly during the summer when running Trudi on the Interstate a ways or for some hours in town might require a little refreshment. I can score VR1 occasionally on sale for $7/qt, which still comes to $35. Go figure. Alas, I'm not sure if Chevron will continue to promote Havoline at that excellent price this year or again..... I usually would buy in 2 box allotments, though sometimes, I COULD score a single box from Wally too.

P.S. --Havoline has gone up to $23/6 qts. Amazon
