Some advice please, if possible :
I have a 318 3 speed '66 Fury 111 I use nearly daily here in South Africa
Due to contractures in my hands I am thinking of changing to auto, to make driving easier.
I have aquired a complete auto steering colum from a '66 New Yorker and a 727 box.
Can anybody tell me if this is a doable modification?
1. I realise I'll have to change the propshaft, make it shorter?
2. Do I need a different cross member etc for auto
3. Will the '66 NY colum fit in the Fury without major modifications ?
4. Linkages from the colum to auto box obtainable or can one make them?

Sorry for 'stupid' questions, but I have the only wagon in SA and parts/help is very scarce here.
I appreciate any input and advice, before I take this on. I have a mechanical friend that will help me.
Thanks, Roel

A couple things that will help you: MyMopar - Mopar Forums & Information - Parts & Accessories Books , MyMopar - Mopar Forums & Information - Service Manuals

Using these two manuals should tell you what parts (like the trans mount) interchange between the manual and automatic. It should also give you an idea of what you may need for linkage.

An easier way around the linkage issue would be an aftermarket shifter. You could leave the existing column in place and not drive yourself nuts sourcing all the parts. It would be better to use the stock parts, but in your case, that could be a workable alternative and get you back on the road faster.

One comment... Are you sure that the 727 trans is for a small block and has the correct bolt pattern?

Hi John, Thank you so much for the info.
It did cross my mind to just do an aftermarket shifter, as the car is not that rare and is my driver. I just have to get over the idea of making a hole in a pristine floor for the shifter..... But I think that is gonna be easier
I bought a spare 318 poly with 727 attached from a '66 Monaco. My next longterm plan is a stroker poly with the spare engine, but I can use this 727 on my current 318.
I shall be reading all the info you have sent me in the next few days
Thanks:thumbsup:
