My Christmas present to myself got delivered today....Brake booster and MC for the 70 300. Stupid shippers dropped it on the piston rod and broke a piece off the plastic housing. Rockauto was great and refunded the entire purchase price no questions. Now the problem is...can I plastic weld this piece back on and use my "Free" booster/MC?

looks pretty bad bud....ld just put it out with the trash...where you say you lived???/

The plastic part is just a housing for the foam air filter that surrounds the piston rod so I thought I might get away with JB Weld or similar as a possibility. However being a brake component might just keep the MC and order a new booster.

I am out in Cochrane Derek..

He needs an address and for you to put it not quite with the other trash in a plastic bag with a big red bow on it.

Before you decide to glue it, test it to see if it holds vacuum, if it doesn't... don't even think about glue. I would replace it or rebuild it with the piece from the old one, that you sent in as a core already. No happy answer from me... brakes matter.

just rassin....enshure that puppy works or would replace...looks simple enough to fix but pics are generaly misleading

I still have the original in the car so a rebuild is possible. To be perfectly honest I will try the JB Weld first just for the practice. A new one is just a few shipping days away from Rockauto. The broken piece is not part of the vacuum side it looks to be just the guide for the rod with a foam air filter inside and a rubber bellows cover which is not airtight.

There's some stuff they use to fix broken radiator shrouds that looks pretty good. Try googling that.

Might be a dumb suggestion but if you're going to try the JB Weld approach, after the JB Weld fix, I think I'd put some shrink wrap around it to keep it compressed tight.

I think the best suggestion here was to use the plastic cover from the existing booster to replace the broken one on the new booster.

It's in your hands, so you can provide the best inspection. there is a valve at that area but it wont look like it, its job is to allow atmospheric pressure in... that is how they apply assist. don't underestimate the importance of those parts... use vacuum pump and see if the booster holds, or have one of your techs use the smoke machine on it... don't fool around with glue if it leaks, besides there might be more damage than you think.

:poke:

I wonder if the old standard fix anything repair kit would work

This happened 12 months ago but had a happy ending as Rockauto refunded the part in its entirety and let me keep it. Some JB weld for the plastic collar and a couple hours spent with Critter this spring and voila free booster and master installed!

I didn't even look at the date to see it was a old thread, great that it all worked out.
