Apparently many of the mid 2000 SRT's completely die at 100,000 miles. It looks like a very nice car for the mileage though.

Buy it change the valve springs and you would be good to go. I would change the valve springs on any 09 and earlier Hemi. Apparently Daimler thought the valvle springs should expire after x number of heat cycles.

:-) I'm guessing those magnums' aren't gonna come close to 100 000 miles 67 Fury ?

Based on a 8.75 inch wanger, that would be 571 428 571 cycles ( in and out again ) :-)

Still want one, too much money though. Change valve springs, huh? I'll try to remember that if I ever get one

That's what I gather, friend of mine owns a garage and he subscribes to a service that gives you common problems with any given car/truck and by a large margin valve springs break. Real problem is they are such a interference engine even having the valve open just a touch it really bangs the piston, then the pistons are so short and fragile to reduce rotating mass that it does not take much to break a skirt then the piston cocks in the bore breaking head, powdered metal(cast) steel rod and then the block. Valve strings can go 100,000 + in a engine that is on a lot or may break at 50.000 for the church lady.

Were these valve springs a problem only up to a certain year?

My engine man says when a rod breaks, which they do, you can only replace all eight, not just the one that broke. An apparent weak spot on the 5.7 engine.

Rumors fragility are a bit exaggerated, a modern Hemi is comparable to a modern GM LSx in reliability. A friend is pushing 200k miles on his Magnum R/T, and the only extra precaution he took was to change the timing chain and tensioner to the upgraded version at about 100k miles. Lots of trucks out there with way more miles than that, too.

Seems to have disappeared when eagle version was released ~ 2009. SRTs may not have the problem because their valve springs are more stout due to more aggressive cam. They are a beehive type spring which has only perfected in the last decade or so, I guess they have funky harmonics because of the diameter change from top to bottom. These are something that have gotten more common today so quality has improved, like I said I would change them because they are a documented problem on 03-08 hemis. The question is when is one going to break not if. They can be changed with some simple under the valve cover work, when one breaks it will bend a vavle even if you shut it off immediately now you have to pull a head and if it were to happen at speed (rare) you probably going to hurt a piston. I have learned this because I have 2 here with identical problems one with a broken rod and hole in the block and one with just a broken piston, I'm pulling parts from each to make one good engine piling it all back together and stuffing it back in a 04 Durango that I'm going to use to tow my car to the track, I'll let you know how the mix and match goes, if I can get a couple of years out of it its a win.

Btw it is the heat cycles on the valve springs not miles the longer trips you drive the better. I have to disagree against the LS from my experience they are as reliable as a anvil, prices of used engines prove that a hemi is 1500 and a LS is 750 because the only market for them is old Novas and Camaros and anyone who knows me knows I hate to admit that but the LS has it in spades over a 03- 08 Hemi on reliability.

The cost difference has at least as much to do with the fact that about 3 LSx are built for every Hemi built, as with comparative demand for replacements. The demand for modern Hemis for street rods and resto-mods on muscle cars is pretty strong too, so that drives the price up.

70BBDodge is probably right about the pre-08 or so Hemis compared to the LS, but the situation has definitely flip-flopped post 2010 for the 6.4 engines (better timing chain), and especially post 2014 since they seem to have solved all the timing chain issues on the 5.7 as well. At the same time GM has had a few issues with the latest LS engines (some very high-profile- it sucks when a couple of the long term test cars you gave to journalists need new engines at low miles), and it gets worse the higher the output. A 5.7 Hemi is pretty comparable to a 5.3 LS, but I'd favor a 6.4 Hemi over the 6.2 LS by a small margin, and the Hellcat is proving considerably more reliable than the Z-06 supercharged LS series. Given that the manufacturers knew owners were going to pound the bejeezus out of those vehicles, I think FCA did a better job of gorilla-proofing the Hellcat, at the expense of it pretty much requiring a bigger vehicle to hold all the pumps, cooling loops, and heat exchangers it has. Its one weak spot seems to be the fact that they didn't spline or key the blower drive pulley on the crank and instead counted on an exotic high-friction washer. Yeah, who didn't see that problem coming? The aftermarket pretty promptly came up with alternatives, though.

At any rate, they're both really solid engine families and continuing to prove that the high center of gravity and overall size of DOHC isn't necessary in performance v8s.

I still want one! Now I know what as to 've done if I get on (crossing fingers). It sure would be weird to own a nice daily driver, as I own pos dd and spend my limited funds on my old Mopars.

How hard to put a 6 speed manual tranny from a Challenger in one of those Magnums you think...
