Fuel Tank Recommendations

Guys,
I have diagnosed my fuel tank(68 NYer) junk. This is a real shame because from the outside it is beautiful. When I dropped it from the car it sound like sand and gravel was sliding inside it. When I pulled the sending unit, oh it was nasty. It seems that Spectra has the market corner on these. What are your opinions? Are there any other options?

If the tank is solid, take it to a local rad shop and have it boiled and sealed. It can look like this when done

You could have it cleaned and sealed, then replace the sender

I ended up using a B-body sender and tweaking the arm, but this is in a 69 tank.

What ever you do don't throw out that sending unit retaining ring. The repops are ****. My tank leaked until I found another old one.

Personally I would buy a new tank if you plan on keeping the car for any length of time. Spectra tanks are your only option for a new tank, but they make a good tank. At least you can buy a new one, none made for my '66.

Mike, this was discussed in its own thread a few (?) weeks ago and I thought it showed that you can indeed use a 67 tank in the 66.

I had mine repaired using the RENU system by a local shop. Wagon tanks are made of unobtanium. They did a bang up job and the tank now has a lifetime warranty. They can also fix and rust through including big chunks. In all, my tank was $750, but again, there are no reproduction Wagon tanks. The shop even walked me through the process when I dropped off the tank. I saw all of the stations of the process and several tanks in stages of repair. http://www.gastankrenu.com/

I need a new tank too and the spectra tanks on Rock Auto are listed at about $350 +-.
If you can get a new tank, get a new tank.

Thanks for the info Stan but '66 is different than '65 it won't fit there is extra framing brackets to prevent it from working.

I appreciate all of the feedback. I"m leaning toward a Spectra tank off Ebay for about $280. The local radiator shop said that it would be at least $100 to boil it.

I ran across the following two listings on Ebay.

I've seen them same sending units on ebay, and have it bookmarked. They've got quite a story on their "about" page. I wonder if they make the parts here or overseas? The tanks are a good price!

I bought the same sending unit from vansauto, it looks identical to the original as far as fit and quality. I haven't installed it yet as I need to finish prep work on the underside of the Newp.

I have bought several things from them in the past. I've always been pleased with the products, communication, and fast free shipping.

I just got back from the radiator shop. After showing them the amount (close to 1/2 gallon) of rust and crap that I sucked out of the tank yesterday he advised I get a new tank if one is available. With that said I'm going to get a new tank, sending unit, and filler neck from Vans. I'll post an update once I have all of the stuff in hand.

Another question.

Any of you guys ever replace the front portion of the fuel line that runs through the front sub frame? Is it a real pain?

I hooked a hose and funnel to the front end of the line where it hooks to the fuel pump and dumped a can of carb cleaner in it. This forced a pint of old and nasty fuel out of the lines. So, I'm thinking I should replace these as well.

I had the line out on mine when I sent the frame out to be powder coated.
It took a little time to fish it back in, probably easiest from the rear.
Once I got it close I used a coat hanger and a flashlight to line it up with the hole in the frame, a little back and forth I got it through.
Might be a little easier with two people.

Also I did this with no engine, wheel liner...
