Gauge cluster?

I came across an ad for a 77-78 New Yorker coupe. The seller states that the gas gauge is non functional. That in itself isn't that bad. But the fact the odometer also just stopped working. You'd be actually rolling the dice and betting the farm attempting to drive anywhere.

I'm curious on fixing the odometer? Is that itself fixable or would I need a whole new cluster? Especially since I'm a body man who isn't confident in his mechanical and electrical skills.

There ARE parts and pieces that are replaceable in the speedo head assy. At the most, you might need a new odometer drum assy. At least, the plastic retainer that keeps all of the numbers lined up and turning to the next one as the speedo cable spins it (via plastic gears).

If there is a trip odometer in the mix (I suspect there might be), that can complicate things a little, but not majorly so, to me.

In many respects, if you can change an 1157A bulb, you can repair speedometers! Quite simple and not hard, ONCE you learn how they operate.

Might need to get a used unit from a salvage yard for parts. Those parts usually were NOT sold via the normal dealership parts channels, but through specific speedo shops.

To me, I would not let that detail kill the purchase of that car IF it is really what you want.

My 69 speedo has a trip meter. Last time dash was out, trip meter gear had gone crooked which made speedometer bounce all over and odometer not run. I repaired it I thought and it lasted 1000 miles. Now broke again. I hate that dash haha. Takes at least and hour to get it out and 2 hours to put it back.

its pretty easy to work on the dash of a formal, you can get to everything from the front unlike the fuselages
