Glove Box replacement

I purchased a great quality repro glovebox for my '68 Newport. The old one was gone, so I had a blank slate for new installation. After some initial wrangling, it appears that the A/C flapper vent housing has to be removed to install the new one, is that right? I realize at the factory, the $2.00 glove box wasn't a priority item, but it seems a bit ridiculous to have to do that much work to put in a new box. Any one have experience, can offer tips/tricks? Any input would be appreciated!

Most of the time they were installed in the dash before it was installed in the car. My 66 has a two piece glove box for this reason. I had to put the bottom piece in first and then the top piece.

Wow, I remember messing with one years ago, but unfortunately I don't recall what had to be done to get it in. Where did you get the replacement at?

Purchased from ebay. Fmmpar was the seller. Quick delivery, great quality. It is a 1pc unit, so I can't install it in pieces.

Did not know it was a one piece unit, Your best shot then would be to loosen the dash mounting bolts on the lower right and center, pull the dash out and then put it in from underneath.

Having owend several 68's here's my spin on this.
I have the same repop box.
The repop is a robust one piece unit,but will end up as a two piece unit when done,LOL!
As mentioned,the box was attached to the dash when it was installed in the car from factory.The HVAC box was already attached to the firewall and does fill up the space under the dash quite well...
Next to impossible to re and re the glovebox from underneath the dash.

When facing the dash,the left portion of the glovebox is basically filler. Barely enough room for a pack of fuses-nothing heavy.

My box I broke in two.
I wrestled the main portion into the opening,leave it sitting loose to move it around.Then installed the filler piece using speed nuts and screws to make one box. Buttoned up the main section...Done
Nobody will notice unless you point it out--or show your car with the box open (yuk)..Besides who drives with the glove box open??

Dash is bolted to the firewall with screws UNDERNEATH the windshield. Not gonna budge not one bit..zilch,nada..

THE LOWER BOLTS, underneath the dash. One on the right cowl, and one in the center.

Put a new one into my 67 CHRYSLER.
Yes. It was a mo-fo..
Added a few non original creases but it went in. Eventually.

After having a bent, smashed one direct from the factory and decades of not having one at all, I am happy to say that my late father's '68 Newport has a brand new glove box! I removed the lower dash screws at the right corner and middle and was able to pull the dash out enough to get it installed. Thanks Traintech55!!

Apology accepted. All of us here on this page have learned some tricks over the years. The great thing is we have this site to share them with others. You have know idea how many times I have skinned my knuckles working on dashboards over the years.
