Nothing worse than snapping an arresting cable during a carrier landing. Rare but they do happen even though cables are replaced after 125 traps. In this case the cable snapped because of an overlooked issue with the arresting engines that let the cable play out while slowing the aircraft. Nonetheless, eight sailors were injured by the flailing cable which is 1 1/2" thick. 2016

This is one of my favorites passed on to me by a retired Navy Captain friend who passed away at the young age of 59. Was an expert in steam propulsion and damage control.

What happens when a anchor chain starts a run away.

A diagram of the shots as they pass by in the video and how to tell things are going from bad to very, very bad. When you see red then run for the hills.

15 fathoms = 90 feet
12 shots = 1080 feet.

My first 12 years was as a BM. Spent LOTS Of time on the forecastle. Then I changed rates to MA. For you Navy guys you'll know what the rates are. If others are interested, I can explain more. "Go Navy".
