Help with speedometer cable

Speedo ran good last two years. It snapped off at the cruise head. I got a cable only and installed it. One week later it broke at the cruise head.
How do I determine if it's speedo or cruise that's bad without having to buy a new bypass cable.

Did you liberally lube it up with White Lithium Grease? if not that must be done.

Unhook the cable that goes from the cruise control to the speedo. Take your electric drill and spin, being sure to spin it in the right direction, the end of the cable that goes to the speedo. If it turns normally and the speedo operates properly, then you can safely assume that the cruise control unit is bad. They were often troublesome even when new.

Your situation is common when the cruise head locks up or takes too much effort to operate. The input cable is direct-geared to the transmission's output shaft, so when the cruise transducer stops turning, the cable snaps as it is still being driven by the transmission.

Chase a "new-to-you" cruise head from a salvage yard or a reman unit if you can find one.

I'm gonna try one more time. I was trying to find a adaptor to bypass the cruise and see if that was a problem.

Just get a speedo cable assy for a non-cruise car to bypass the cruise transducer. I have never known of an "adapter" to put the two cables together or have seen one. NOT to say they don't exist, but I've never heard of one over the past 45+ years in parts. We sold lots of reman transducers (GM), though.

Agree with non-cruise speedometer cable and put the cruise on the shelf until it can be rebuilt

Ok. Got new direct cable on and took cruise off car. Anyone been in them before?
Unit looks very clean and everything turns correctly. Didn't find anything locking up. Gonna check. Vacuum side next.

Vacuum side looks perfect also. Gonna hook a drill to it and see if anything locks up.
