Have you ever seen Fresno, Bakersfield, El Centro, Blythe, Needles, Lancaster, or Barstow? If so then you would understand why it is ok. All near or in the Mojave Desert except for Fresno at the lower very dry end of the San Joaquin Valley. Just take a look on Google Maps to see how flat, barren, brown and dry these places are. Fresno, by far is the nicest of the bunch, which is saying only a little. I'll say one thing about Fresno and it is one of the few cities laid out in an almost perfectly straight north/south east/west grid pattern.
