Maytag repair thread

When I remodeled the kitchen 16 years ago I had a choice. Go with the proven refrigerator compressor that has been around for decades or the fancier models that have the high energy efficiency. My choice was the Frigidaire standard model. The same was for my home a/c, twenty five years ago. Go with the 10 seer unit or high ones. One part went out in the time since. It looks like a a/c dryer unit. Still works fine.

We did a kitchen reno in 2005 and installed a Matag dishwasher. After a couple years it starting having issues requiring service calls at least annually. At about year 5 we had a quote of several hundred to fix it and also a suggestion from the technician it wasn't going to be long before we had other issues. At that point it got booted to the curb and replaced with a Bosch. Not a single issue in 8 years and we still can't hear it run.

As suggested in "remember when" here is the maytag repair thread. No work done yet, so here are some pictures. These workhorses are from 1974. And have worked without service until the heating element died in the dryer. I just moved them back upstairs and don't have them hooked up yet, but the washer weighs 230 pounds with no water in it. That right there is the most indestructible washing machine ever made. They need a timer about once every 30 years and maybe a belt. The only downside to that longevity is if the oil seal on the agitator shaft starts to let the odd drop of oil find it's way into the tub, the thing is almost impossible to disassemble because the agitator and the shaft and all the stuff that holds it together have over the decades morphed into one solid piece.

Gonna have to disagree with this. My 350 dollar Ropar is all electro-mechanical. I even checked the parts book for my model.
FWIW, this entry level Roper Model from GE is also sold under a zillion other Brand names.
And it works better than my previous "state of the art" $$$$ Fisher Paykal...

I bought my Maytag washer and dryer new in 1984, 34 years ago and still have them. I had to service the washer three years ago now and replaced the drive belt and the motor - it was pretty easy to do. The gas dryer has never been touched. I don't ever expect to buy any of the new junk that is on the market today. But if I had to, it would be a Speed Queen commercial pair. Don't know much about Roper.

My Maytags are both pretty quick in carrying out their tasks - about 20 - 30 minutes for the washer and longer for the dryer, maybe 45 minutes.

There is just no excuse for the crap on the market today.

My Maytags were manufactured in Newton, Iowa.

Wow lots of posts! I opened up both of them today to take a look, the washer has a small leak I didn't know about. It's where the water gets sprayed in. Doesn't look too bad though. The dryer had an unbelievable amount of dust and lint in it, a good 2 inch blanket over everything. I took a sponge and got the inside sparkling again. The heating element turned out to not be bad, it was a wire that had been sheared off over the years. It finally burned through. Glad it never started a fire!

Yep you are supposed to be able to just pull it off. Ive tried before, its like trying to pull a boulder in half.

Got the washing machine hooked up, here it is in action. I also fixed the air gap leak. The tapping in the spin cycle is because I left the dryer back loose.

If you are going to watch laundry being done, a front load is much better. You can set up a lounger to watch.

My front loader is 9 years old. I don't have the smell problem because I do not leave the washer door closed when the laundry is done, and my cycle is 45 minutes.

I do like the new bigger capacity dryers, but ive used a front loader before, and they don't get stains out.

cheesy ad...But, we had one similar...think it was a portable dishwasher in olive green.

Sorry but I had to disagree. They use way less water and the tumbling action, actually gets them cleaner as opposed to the ones doing the twist. From my experience anyway.
