On this day October 1, 1972, 47 years ago today Richard Petty got his 148th Career victory in the Wilkes 400 at North Wilkesboro, NC. This race was probably won before the teams ever got to the track because after the beating and banging between Petty and Allison at Martinsville just the week before when the Petty Enterprises team was preparing this car for this race at North Wilkesboro they had a trick up their sleeve. They knew ahead of time that more than likely there was gonna be more of the same beating and banging between the two in this race. So Dale Inman cut out the fenders and welded what has been described as a mini roll cage in the wheel well area around each tire to prevent a pushed in fender from cutting a tire. Then they welded the fenders back on the mini roll cage which was attached to the car. In the race Bobby Allison was running great and looked to be on his way to victory as he was half a lap ahead of Petty with 50 laps remaining when the only caution flag of the race flew due to a crash between Max Barrier and James Hylton on lap 362 of 400. When the green flag flew again there was only 26 laps remaining in the race. Richard and Bobby immediately began rubbing fenders lap after lap but with about 7 laps remaining the rubbing turned into banging. Richard led the way into the first turn on lap 397, and when Allison drove under him to make the pass for the lead, Richard shut him down by using a slower car as a pick. That infuriated Allison, who turned right crashing into the left side of Richard’s car causing him to let off the gas and letting Allison take the lead. A lap later it was Petty on the charge making a bid for the lead when the cars entered the first turn. The two cars slammed together and then hit the outside wall, with Petty’s car climbing onto the top of the guardrail before slamming back down on the track. Allison continued as Petty recovered and resumed chase. Allison’s right-side tires were smoking from his pushed in fenders rubbing the tires and the driver’s compartment was filled with smoke. By the time the two got the white flag Petty closed within three car-lengths and when the two drivers headed into the first turn for the final time, Allison went high to avoid parts of the front and rear bumpers from Petty’s car, lying in the groove from the previous lap’s drama. Richard drove to the inside, managed to pass Allison’s smoking car and was able to nurse his car to the checkered flag first for the win. Half the crowd was happy with Petty’s victory and the other half infuriated that Junior Johnson’s car had come up the loser on its home track. The final short-track event of the season had come to an end and fans saw one of the most unbelievable finishes in NASCAR history. Buddy Baker finished four laps back in third place. After the race was over a drunk Bobby Allison fan shoved Richard and tried to start a fight with him but his Brother Maurice with Richard's helmet in his hand convinced the fan to change his mind. Rumors surfaced that Maurice actually hit the fan, but in truth no blows were ever thrown. Richard went on to win his 4th series Championship. Also Richard would go on to win at North Wilkesboro 6 more times, with a total of 15 victories at this great track that NASCAR has sadly forgotten about.

One of my favorite tracks before they shut it down and sent it's dates to the boring cookie cutter tracks.
Drivers used to refer to it as "the paper clip".
