Photos of Vintage Auto Dealerships, Repair Shops, and Gas Stations

467 Broadway in Kingston , New York. You gotta like the signage.

Gone now.

That is presently a CarX muffler shop. New building, of course.
That area used to be called "car row". As late as 1969 there were around 24 new and used car dealers in that area of Kingshighway.
Mid-City C-P was at 2245. I got my first car from a used...excuse me, "pre owned" lot nearby. My brother worked at Placke Chevrolet, now gone, replaced by Don Brown Chevrolet.
Now there are only three new car dealers on that stretch.

310 Osage Ave, Bartlesville, OK. circa 1950. Dealership, opened in 1941 in this existing TWO building setup, is long gone, but still in business with the Lincoln brand in another locartion in Bartlesville.

This location has had multiple repurposing the past 20 years.

Here in 2023.

If you didnt know all the things this curvilinear, mid century modern (built circa 1951) started as/was in its 70 year lifetime, the form factor (e.g. showroom, garage, huge parking areas, smack-dab in a residential area, etc) gives it away.

May no longer even be SA outlet store .. they said they were closing at this location in June 2024

1966 State route 122 in Hopedale Illinois. Kind of unusual to see an arial pic of a gas station.

Reportedly closed in 1974 during the energy crisis when there was no gas available.

Now a Casey's General Store.

Forrester Ford-Lincoln-Mercury, Chambersburg PA, 1982ish. What caught my eye was the 12% interest rate being advertised as "best". I remember those days.

Still around as a Lincoln dealer. It's kind of nice to see their building hasn't been changed to the generic dealerships we see now.

Standard/Chevy dealer combo, Auburn, KY. year and exact address unknown. Me and Mr. Pegman spent some time in the Google car (assuming that water tower is still in same place) with no luck:poke:

This place has a very interesting history. 308 W. Genesee St. in Syracuse, NY. It's a wedge shaped building (several in Syracuse) and sits on its own block called Byrne Square.

Known as the Byrne building, it started as a Miller tire distributor in 1920 owned by Matthew Byrne. He changed direction, started a new dairy business and started bottling milk there in 1933. BTW, Bryne dairy is huge around here 75 gas station/convivence stores along with their dairy products. BTW, they have great ice cream!

After that, they stored cars for Bressee Chevy, right across the street and mentioned in post #62.

Around 1960, Robert Castle opened his third foreign car dealership here to sell Russian Moskovich cars and was the sole distributor until Francis Gary Powers was shot down over Russia. He cancelled the contract because of backlash.

I'm not sure when they closed. It's an Arthur Murray dance studio and a clothing consignment shop now.

I think this one is here already.

Vintage pic, circa WWII, Elgin at Second, Tulsa OK.

80+ years later, they (local owners) obviously knew they had something unique, currently in-between alternative usages (design/size must restrict what kind of business would threee here).

Probably need the whole block full of stuff to make a go of it (assuming Tulsa downtown has the necessary commercial appeal)

Location unknown. Dont think pic is that old, but car is a 1936 Ford "three window" coupe (Model 48). I believe it had a V8.

That's what they call "Westergard" look. LaSalle grille, Buick skirts etc.

I thought at first it was this car. Jack Calori's 1936 Ford 3-Window Coupe - Kustomrama but the bumper guards are missing. That lead me to this car, a more modern build (1999) Jon Fisher's 1936 Ford - Kustomrama and I think it may be photoshopped into a vintage pic.

I didn’t think there were any stand alone Lincoln dealers. I seem to recall that after the plug was pulled on Mercury, some of the Ford dealers had to take on Lincoln because the sales volume wasn’t high enough to merit solo dealerships. In 2012, I was car shopping on line and spotted a brand new Navigator for a price that seemed too good to be true. I called for more info but instead of getting a sales pitch, the sales manager confirmed it was the price out the door and then vented his spleen about slashing the prices because Lincolns weren’t moving fast enough and arguing with Ford about it and on and on. Kind of an odd experience.
