Has anyone ever repaired one of these units without totally removing the steering column. I am having an issue with the one in my 1970 Dodge Monaco with floor shift automatic.

What is it you're trying to repair? The sliding coupling at the bottom or the rubber biscuit up top?

I had to repair the both the upper and lower couplers. Got a kit for the lower one but I needed to replace the rag joint in the upper coupler. The NOS parts out there were very expensive so I made my own using a hockey puck with metal sleeves for the allan bolts to counter sink into. Works OK for car that is not a daily driver. Thanks for asking.

The Rover coupling is 1 5/16ths thick, while the OEM unit is 1 inch. I took Rover to a machine shop that milled the excess thickness off of one side. Then I drilled the recesses in the holes for the Allen bolt heads.

HOWEVER, I now think the 5/16 doesn't need to be milled off because there is enough travel in the pot (lower) coupling to accommodate the extra thickness. YMMV depending on your car, of course.

Now yer talkin' - that exactly what to do, and it's way cheaper than the OEM replacements, and a lot safer than a hockey puck.
