Ah, you gotta be a kid in the 1950's to appreciate these scenes, or remember what your parents may have been up to ... pre-dates me, but we do have my mother at a "sock hop" in 1957 :)

This came in handy later after we were bored with the in box molds to make HO slot car bodies for lighter weight, equals faster speed on the drag strip. heh about as far as I got with drag racing.

Wonder how many Millennials, Gen-Z-ers and Alphas are blissfully baffled by this sign?

i recall a film like this (mid 1960's early in elementary school). may have been this "classic" as the turtle seems familiar. if not this one, the desk & hallway drills in the school building sure do bring it all back.

by 1970 or so, i dont recall any mention of this in school anymore.

8 mins, but 2-3 mins. is all you need to recall or for some of us see what today's oldtimers dealt with 50-75 years ago.

Who can remember or forget the air raid drills in elementary school!! Sit indian style in the hallway and kiss the floor! Pain and suffering for us fat kids!

I remember in grade school we'd have 3 "Civil Defence Drills" a year. The last one we'd actually go all the way down into the fallout shelter. Oh how we looked forward to that! Ironically a couple of years ago I visited my old elementary school and the "Fallout Shelter" sign is still above the door.

my elementary school is also still standing. Built 1926 and now has an national historic designation. I have been back as an old man to discover that most of the CD signage is gone (both ON the building and INSIDE).

Contemporary photos below .. just like I remember it, including hiding under that very water fountain nearly 60 years ago.

some of our civil defense drills were in the class room the "duck & cover" type, others into the hallway outside the class room, heads down, arms on head, sitting and facing the wall.

THEN, because we were in "tornado alley", there were the frightening trips to the basement .. a damp, musty, place where Boris Karloff and the Mummy lived. we at least combined the basement trip with the siren sounding tests of the CD system.

so the basement drill was to my memory rare.
