Glenn Strange was one of the iconic faces of classic cowboy films, and his role as Sam the Barkeep remains one of his most memorable in the western genre. Standing at 6’6” with a commanding presence, Strange had a unique ability to appear both intimidating and approachable, making him the perfect bartender or trusted saloon owner in a frontier town.

Beyond Sam the Barkeep, Glenn Strange was widely known for playing Frankenstein’s monster in Universal’s horror films, as well as numerous western roles throughout the 1950s and ’60s. His career spanned over four decades, with roles ranging from villains and henchmen to reliable bartenders and saloon owners, each leaving a distinct mark on audiences.

Even in his later years, Strange was celebrated as a “cowboy legend,” a symbol of the rugged yet likable figures of the American West. He passed away in 1973, but his characters—especially Sam the Barkeep—continue to live on in the imagination of fans who cherish the dusty saloons and wild frontier towns of classic westerns.

I remember seeing one of these, don't know if someone in the neighborhood had this or I was ogling this in the store at Christmas time, but I never had one.

I had a gas station. It was a "hand me down" from a cousin, so it wasn't the best. I would have never broken the pumps or the lift, but he did.

I had a ball with it though!

Also had the Aurora HO track and cars. I still have it... and in fact just last night was trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm just never gonna set it up... Just have to face facts on that one.

Mrs. Big John worked at K-Mart long before I met her. She started working there when she lived in Muskogee, OK, became head cashier in just a few weeks, and then when she moved back to Syracuse, she started working at one of the local stores. Yes, she announced the "Blue Light Specials" and she ran the sporting goods department. The reason she ended up doing that was she was smart enough to do the paperwork for gun purchases without screwing them up!

She told me she loved eating lunch there!
