SOTU

There are many things in this country that need attention and long-term "fixing". It's not going to happen overnight or at the wave of a magic wand. They're going to take time and a concerted effort by all involved to make them work.

First thing is to mandate that all legislation (state and federal) must pass by a 65% margin. No "nuclear option" allowed. If it can't get to 65%, then negotiate with colleagues to get there, across the aisle included. All legislature bodies, no exceptions.

Many institutions need to be modernized and streamlined for better service to their clients. The Veterans Admin is one. There are others in even more need. The issues with the veterans' issues of even seeing a doctor came to light during the GWBush Presidency. Months just for an appointment, then if the doctor was on vacation, "reschedule". As those who had the appointment had to travel long distances, it was on them to do it again. Not good!

This nation is spending massive amounts of money to house "detainees" seeking asylum in this country. Many for years! Not to forget about the massive amounts of money for "free rides back home", either.

Take those same people, put them in a fast track nationalization/education process, get them "a card", and get them back into the workplace paying sales taxes and such, to help our economy grow. In the '60s, we'd travel to west TX to see relatives. The guys I'd see in the work crews building I-20 were, many times, "white guys" working construction to pay for their college tuition. Many would get a good tan in the process. In more current times, check out the nationality of the "brown guys" on most construction projects in this nation. Get some positive tax income from these people rather than a drain on resources. Let them experience "The American Dream" they came for and build their new lives here.

Remember the old WPA? Put these people into that type of program. There are enough small towns with declining populations that modest-priced housing could be used by them. Let them help rebuild aging infrastructures in those towns and regions, as they get paid to do so. If they like where they are, let them stay there and build their lives, if not, let them move to another place, as a journeyman laborer of sorts.

Then repurpose the many border guards and such back into the normal law enforcement populations of our towns and states. Make our neighborhoods even safer than they are now.

Let the gov't do a lease deal with FCA for 300s/Chargers/Durangos/Pacificas for our federal officials to pair up and see each other's districts, rotating every quarter or so. See what problems they have and propose how to best fix them. No fancy meetings with business leaders specifically, but see normal people and get a feel for what they are going through in their daily lives. Jobs, education, cost of living, cost of healthcare, availability of healthcare, etc. Let their aides keep track of other things in the office, using advanced communications. D must be paired with R, whenever possible. Look for "common ground" and go from there. End result is that a "One size fits many" orientation to many government programs could be devised and implemented for the good of the majority of citizens. The more standardized a program is nationally, for the areas it serves, the better the implementation and lower costs should result. Better efficiency in operation and spending, too.

There are some things which the feds need to do, some the states need to do, some the locals need to do. Overlap in some areas with financial support from federal sources. As it seems now, the feds don't want to do/pay for anything, no matter what. That shifts the burden of paying for services onto the states and then into the laps of local taxpayers. The feds say "I'll cut your taxes", the governors will say "I'll cut your taxes", as the locals scramble to rearrange their tax structure to not raise tax rates in order to maintain existing levels of service. IF they can't get that done, then THEY will put a higher tax rate in place on your local properties and such. Raise auto registration fees. Raise local sales taxes. ALL falling into the laps of the local citizens. Is this the fabled "local control" we hear so much about? Get ready for more "local control" if it means higher local tax rates!

By observation, there are so many things in government that just seem to cost way too much money! A few million for a new 911 control center, etc. We need good and reliable things, but why so much money? The computer system our local school district has were purchased (and obsolete a year later) rather than leased (with upgrades to the newer software a part of the mix), for example. And it probably gets worse from there.

But then there are many things that citizens seem to perceive as "too expensive", but are like a grain of sand in a 55 gallon barrel by comparison. That's the way the expensive "events" the IRS had in Las Vegas were, for example. Some things do need to be reigned-in, as some need to be a little more conservative in nature, it seems. But compare that to a junket to a foreign country by several legislators to seek to increase trade with that country. Several ways to look at those things AND who's involved.

There are many things that could be done, but there are so many it's hard to get that operation even configured! Perhaps there needs to be a Special Executor to make sure "The Swamp" gets drained?

Cost-benefit analysis and efficient spending/investing need to be the operative orientations. You'd think that our conservative legislators would ensure that happens . . . as they spend even more money we don't have and cut taxes even further?

When tax rates were higher, this country had stronger economies as the government had more money to spend. Military bases! Expanded Interstate highways! Electric grid expansions! State highway expansion/extension projects! Corps of Engineer lake projects! NONE of that "public/private partnership stuff", where we give people money to build things we'll pay them to use later. Yep, "big government" spent lots of money back in the '60s and '70s, for the good of the bulk of the USA citizens and the country as a whole. Even expanded social programs to help those that really needed it, although some took advantage of it when they could (insufficient oversight, I suspect). That's another subject for another time. Can't forget about Medicare and Medicaid to help take the burden of caring for older/infirm relatives off of their younger relatives.

Cbody67... "I deliberately didn't watch/hear it. I'll hear enough about it tomorrow."

Too bad you didn't watch his speech...he addressed a lot of your issues, now all you will hear is someone else's interpretation. And THAT is the problem.

My wife and I watched the entire speech as I'm sure many that chimed in did. We loved it!
Perhaps you should watch it on YouTube?

Shame on you for not alerting me at the start of the new season. :poke:
I know Stan, I thought of you when I stumbled on episode 1 while perusing the guide a minute or 2 before episode 1 was about to start.
Sorry buddy.

President Trump was key to Mopar bringing 3/4 Ton and 1 Ton truck production back from Mexico to Warren, Michigan!

Hell.....my 1/2 Ton RAM was built in Warren, Michigan!

The current Warren Truck production is moving to SHAP. The Mexico production will go into Warren Truck hopefully with a new paint shop.
The trickle down started right after the election here. We'll be working overtime at least 'till i retire. The big 3 are upgrading their plants with projects that had been on hold.
As to the speech, i keep waiting for the prez to announce he's cutting the IRS's budget 50% since tax code is supposedly simpler and the ACA is no longer in effect.
