Actually, you couldn't be more wrong if you tried. If you oval, square or diamond the pipe, the area of the crossection remains the same. On the other hand if you collapse the wall in a dented in fashion it doesn't remain the same. Grab your left over paper roll from the washroom toilet paper and experiment a bit - you'll see what I mean. The reason for the lack of flow restriction is simply because as you decrease the cross section area the gases speed up but the back pressure remains the same.
 
OR maybe those headers were TOO BIG to start with.....

A good follow up would be with some pipes 1/8 smaller

There are plenty of headers out there that only really help the top 1000 of an rpm range that the owner dosent drive in....
