The tilt column is indeed very different than their non tilt cousins.
Okay, so this is the 'plunger' or cancelling cam.

The yellow arrow is the cancelling cam and the green one is a locating guide.

This is a bad image (shooting blind), but you can see the adjustment on the switch bracket, left side shown but one screw on each side of column.

Signalling for a left turn moves the cable out toward the driver sliding the switch aft, while a right turn is opposite (duh!), so if it's a switch adjustment that may help with which way to go. Happy hunting.
As an aside, I need to move the plunger to the new wheel first and I'm having one devil of a time figuring out how to remove the retaining ring shown at the bottom of the plunger. The fun just never stops.
