The black cylinder near the bottom right of the pic is also an a/c muffler?

It is on the suction line so it is probably an accumulator. It keeps liquid refrigerant from reaching the compressor.

Thanks I thought one was but I wasn't sure what the other one was. Are they necessary or can I discard them?

Don't discard them, they are there for a reason.

you can discard them if you want to discard your a/c system. if you do, let these guys know. there's any number of them that would be all too happy to take these parts off your hands! good luck with your car, the trip has just begun. SG
