Hey I was changing the transmission fluid when I noticed a crack starting in the transfer plate right by the filter and going to the complete edge of the plate. The car shifts fine and I haven't noticed anything odd from the transmission but the crack was pretty alarming.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? Thank you in advance!

I’m not sure what you are referring to when you say transfer plate. Did you take a picture of it?

The transfer plate is this piece.

Cracks never get better. If this was mine, I'd be looking for another plate and/or complete valve body.

You've gotten lucky that the crack isn't hurting you (right now) and since it's by the filter, I'll bet it's in some drain back, no pressure area. Cracks never get better and it may spread over into someplace else where it may cause some problems.

If the car is together and running, I'd just start looking for the pieces to repair it and change when I got around to it. If it's apart, that's up to you, but I'd fix it now.

My favorite trans part vendor is T'Flite Patty's Shop Mart | eBay Stores Contact him if he doesn't have what you need listed.

BTW, cracks never get better.

I had to resize them... but some of the cracks look superficial, but the one is definitely deeper than what it looks like in photos

I don't think that's a crack.

That looks more like a parting line from the diecasting process.

I hope so! Everything in this car was original when I bought it. Down to the leaking seals! Ironically the pan wasn't leaking but the oil was dark reddish brown and the filter just disintegrated when I touched it.

The old man I bought it off of said his son fixed some of it up and I just assumed that the transmission was what he touched. Apparently not anything was touched!

Here's a video of the diecasting method. At ~1:00 there's a good example of a parting line in a finished piece.

If you were able to source a valve body that was 10 years newer you’d get part throttle kick down which is a nice improvement.

You need the top part of the valve body. That link I gave is the perfect place to get the bits to do that. The cable shift being the main reason for retaining the lower portion.

It's an easy parts swap. I've done this on both my cars. The '65 and earlier just takes a few more steps.
