Well I know it’s been awhile since I’ve last posted, so I figured I’d fill everyone in. The car was finally insured and just got registered today! I was so excited I drove it around and had a blast. But two things became apparent, one this car suffers from sever wheel hop when breaking (I know this is common to this generation of c body and was curious if there was a more simple fix or any fix really). And finally two, that a car that’s been sitting pretty much for close to a year and that’s only been driven very rarely doesn’t wanna run forever once it finally gets the chance. I shut it off after driving for a good hour in a public parking lot and was either the victim of overheating, vapor lock, or a flooded carb, as the car would crank but wouldn’t start. So I locked her up, gave her a kiss goodnight (not literally) through some choice words it’s way for dying not at my house and found a way home. Until tomorrow my beautiful pain in the *** boat.

The cars won.t usually wheel hop. You probably have a worn rear spring bushing or bad shocks.

Dave

I can feel it a little when I’m stopping from certain speeds, and I’ve heard it from some people and even seen footage of it on an old bud lindemann road test

"Motor Trend" used to mention braking wheel hop on the lh side only, in some full-size Chrysler road tests in the earlier 1960s, BUT when you nail the brakes, the wheel can lock-up and slide smoothly, generally.

With the assymetrical mounting of the rear axle to the leaf spring (i.e., not in the middle as most other brands usually are), Chrysler rear suspensions might be more prone to this behavior than not. Especially with aged rubber bushing, front and rear, which can put extra slop into the situation, very possibly.

Do not confuse this with drums which are pulsating due to "out of roundness", though, which is a different thing and can be felt with each brake application, getting more pronounced with greater pedal pressure and speed variable.

Considering the age of the car and such, I'd be more inclined to concur with the weak shocks and rear leaf spring bushings (front eye bushings and rear shackle bushings).

Just some thoughts,

Thank you, it even happens at low speed breaking, the whole thing has a minor shake but increases yes as I apply pressure. It feels like the car is jogging to a stop sometimes

For those concerned it started right up this morning I also learned it could be a corroded starter coil. Which would explain some things, but as of right now it’s all speculation. I drove it to school and smiled the whole way

Interesting. Video seems to illustarte some jouncing of the rear axle, almost twisting (LS pulls back while RS moves forward). I agree with CBODY67, loose bushings and possibly shocks. Question is however, that test car in the video was fairly new (within months of production I suspect) where the bushings should not have been worn. Road surface, tires?

That’s why I was confused because that was brand new at the time. I thought it was because of both the off center rear axle and the leaf springs (because most other brands used coils all around)

Haha, I had the same exact boat in the same color, with the same starting issues.

Sounds to me like you have warped front discs/or drums, from heat or tire installer abuse.

I agree with Marko. I've owned 9 c-bodies and did not have brake wheel hop in any of them.
I would give the rear drums a close examination to see what might have happened during all that time sitting.

I once had terrible wheel hop with my Imperial after it had sat for a long time. Pulled both rear drums and it turned out that the parking brake lever was binding inside the drum. Serviced them with all new hardware and it all moved freely again. Admittedly, it was probably more of a shudder than a hop, but the point is the same: you should pull the drums and check out what's inside.

As mentioned above, i would suggest warped brakes (drums especially) - binding emergency brake very probable, or suspension, or a combination of both. From the other threads you posted, i would probably say the car is in need of a proper go through, or even restoration, to make it more reliable. Otherwise, you might be on the road of fixing one thing, and waiting for something else to break in a short period of time. It's an old car. Some people don't even last that long alive ;)

It had its first resto about 12 years ago. It was great interior exterior and plumbing wise 5 years ago. The previous owner basically undid everything now I have to fix what he did

Ok can we get back to the basics? When it wont start, what happens when the key is turned? Does it just crank and crank but no start? Try cranking it and putting the pedal to the floor. That will unflood the engine if its flooded.

But I bet its vapor lock! Put a composite spacer under the carb. You can try to insulate fuel lines but generally with our ethanol fuel, a small electric pump by the tank will help a lot! You can even add this and retain the mechanical pump!

I think it’s much more than my original assessment, I made a new thread and yeah it’s sadly much worse. It wants to crank and start but it’s got some issues. I wanted to tend to these this weekend but I didn’t even trust driving it home. So I drove it a mile up the road to the local classic mechanic. I trust his work especially with classics.
