I really don't want to install a floor shifter. Any of you modify your column shifter to be tighter & provide a little more control when shifting at the track? I'd also love to cut a new gate for the column, but have no clue where to start.

You can replace all of the shift linkage bushings and may need to rebuild the column to get everything tight. On all of my column shift drag cars I installed a manual valve body with reverse pattern so first and drive are switched that way when shifting manually you don’t accidentally go to far and shift to neutral.

As far as modifying the gate IDK how on a column, I have done it on a floor shifter. I’m sure it can be done.

Change the govenor in the trans and leave it in drive. Make sure you dont come out of the burnout box in low gear.

I like a reverse pattern manual valve body with a column shift. I modified a 67 B body to work that way. I had to weld up the gate and then grind it.

The operation is nice. You put it in 1 at the line, take off and just push lever straight down for second. There is a stop there. You cannot miss second. Then for third you pull shift handle towards you and down. Again you can't miss the gear. These movements are gentle and easy, they are not hard on the column. You are not speed shifting a tractor. You don't need to be rough on the column. I'm sure many remember the ford pickups with broken column shift collars?

1967s have a brass bushing inside of the rubber grommets were the linkage goes through, with a thin flat washer on each side. Also held together with those spiral spring clips, not cotter pins or bent nails. Many people don't know this and they leave the factory hardware out and it makes the linkage sloppy.

I need to pull out the FSM for a few other things, I'll see what diagrams it shows for the shift linkage & compare with what's currently there.

I literally just had the transmission rebuilt. It's ready to put back in the car. The kit in it now shifts like a ****... at least it did before the tow company destroyed the previous transmission. Maybe I'll talk to my guy & see how much it'll run to swap it out for a RMVB kit.
