I have viewed a number of 68 300s with a hood ornament, but MOST without.....

On the other hand MOST if not all 67 300s appear to have this ornament.....

Soooo the ? is = Was this ornament actually an option for 1968? or do the 68s that I have seen have 67 hoods, or transplants of the hood ornaments?
any help is greatly appreciated !!

It would seem that the 67 has a hood ornament, and the 68 has block letters "CHRYSLER" on the driver's side leading edge.

That is a question I have been wondering for years. I can produce more photos without that emblem than I can with. $_573.jpg68chry73858-1q.jpg1968-chrysler-three-hundred-300-convertible-1.jpg

I had a helpful reply on the C body facebook page....according to the thread there = Ralph Nader's safety crusade was able get the govt to eliminate pedestal hood ornaments for 1968, - and for several more years until the 1971 model year. Chrysler did show the H-Os mounted on the 300s on a few television commercials, and perhaps very early build 68s did leave the factory with them installed....so that is the best explanation I have read so far

My Dad's 68 300 did not have an ornament. He drove that off the showroom floor in 68.

I have a '68 parts book, I'll check it out later. Fwiw, there were hood ornaments on the Imps in '67 and not in '68.

So the theory of using up left over stock early in the model year could make sense, only other Explanation would be powertrain related, which is not as far as I could check.

I don't see a single hood ornament in the whole book but my book is a very late '68 edition, in fact some of the pages in my book are from June of '69 superseding the April of '68 edition.

Even though it may not be "correct" in the purest sense ....I went ahead and added some "jewelry" to the hood of my 300!!
Making my decision easier was the fact that I already have non original holes in my hood from a previous owner mounting - what appears to be "trucker air horns" = That is why I have the 440 emblems = they are camouflage over the holes at the back of my hood !!
Installation, and location was made easy by the fact that the factory may have planned for hood ornaments = because there is an access hole to get to the ornament nut!

No harm no foul, it's beautiful!

Looks Great.

I would guess that the factory had the punch out access hole for the hood ornament in the stamping and wasn't about to go to the expense to change it because they excluded the hood ornament. Wouldn't have made sense to retool the inner hood stamping for something that wouldn't be seen or impact the structure.
