Packard Proving Grounds

Each one of these engines is around 2,500 cu. in. making this 10,000 cu. in. total! If you notice they are connected rear to rear(2 forward facing and two rear facing) and Gar Wood himself designed the gear boxes.

Thats gotta be one of coolest boats ever made. :)

They say this is Miss America IX .. running at half power in 2013.

another one of Miss America IX on this vintage film with sound

the last one says its Miss America X .. but alas no sound on this vintage piece

I've seen a lot of classic wood boats in northern Michigan but, nothing like this monster. I love to see that run up and down Lake Charleviox just once.

Matt, not to hijack your thread but wanted to add a little something to it since you like the handmade wood power boats. This one is similar and also has Dodge ancestry to boot. Sorry I don't have better pics, but hope you like it.

PS. Any idea where the "Dodge Boat Works" were located in Detroit?

This is the engine from that boat.

It was at my non denominational engine builder for assessment.

Just think about it, in 1926 when the "Horace" was built they had a big V-12 650HP engine and it was state of the art. Then in 1932, only 6 years later technology and design had advanced to the point of having FOUR V-12's and an astounding 8000HP available in the "Miss America X". Truly impressive!

I've been on the road for the past few days, playing catch up.
My first car, in 1964, was one of these. A 1948 Packard Station Sedan. Original "lil ole lady" owned, 54K miles, garage find in Cold water Michigan. Paid $85.00 and another $5 bucks for a battery, and drove it home.
Thanks for posting Matt.
