So I started playing around with Dale's brown convertible, knowing i also had to check for a cluck in the driveshaft. We are also putting road wheels on the beast. Long story short, I had to pull the hogs head, check the pics, I am sure you can see where the clunk was coming from.

Hog's head...I ve heard of this term before but forgot about it. I think i'll start calling it this from now on, lol.

How the hell did the pin do that? slip out of place then wear a hole through the cast iron carrier/case?

You need a carrier Gary ?
I have a spare hogshead to put in. But sure, I am also going to check the hardened teeth carefully too since the oil was silver it had so much metal flake in it. I am thinking it will have worn the teeth faces.

Yeah they work a little loose and each time you accelerate and decelerate it smacks the hole back and forth, over time it wears like that. Sometimes if you are punishing it, the thing will give way.

1 hogshead = 63 gallons (rounded off)

Seriously...

It's my fault. I was driving this car with Gary riding shotgun. I said the U joint feels loose. Listen & it made a clunk sound. So we told Dale. Gary got behind the wheel & said it may be the U joint, but it feels like something in the rear is loose. Dale was standing there thinking "oh no this sounds expensive"

I doubt it is your fault Bob, that has been wearing for quite a while.

Thanks, Gary ! Like the looks of the road wheels ! So, if ya need more "funding" for the rear end, let me know. Or, just charge it to Bob....:soapbox:
