I had an '84 model Shelby Charger. Fun car. Trouble free, but the shifter was very "notchy". I would be tempted to add a supercharger if available...and a better shifter.

Did you change the shift bushings to heim joints?
 
Probably the most likely Omni/Horizon variant you'd catch me in.

It is basically an Omni. Although low in miles it is naturally aspirated. Drive it a few years and rack up 30,000 miles and it is nothing special in my mind. A Direct Connection super charger was offered but only upped the power to basically stock turbo 1 non intercooled power. That was around 140/150 hp if I remember correctly. The Charger was a bit heavier than the Omni and was a concern back then when available power from such small engines meant weight was even more of a factor. A friend of mine bought the first year Omni GLH non turbo new. At 110 hp and a light body with no air bags and other saftey **** the thing was light. It was an absolute hoot to drive with the 5 speed. I was hooked and eventually got my GLHS Omni.

The lousy shifter and torque steer were main issues with mine.
Fastest vehicle Mopar offered at the time. Dark days for performance cars.
 
I drove one for a couple of months years ago while my neighbor was deployed. 2.2 turbo with a 5 speed. I drove it more than my own car.
 
I had one that I bought for next to nothing. Automatic with an auto trans. It was a rusty POS that to this day I have no idea why I bought it. I realized that I wanted no part of it so pulled the starter out for another car I had and sent it down the road.

Dark days yes and no. It was rather exciting time too. Computer management starting to really take hold and the beginning of un heard of power for the street with very few cubic inches. With the beginings of low aspect ratio tires on big [for the time] 15 inch wheels on a tiny car and the low overall weight these things handled like a fighter jet compared to an Olds Cutlass.
I remember my 86 GLHT Omni [before I got my glhs] came stock with Goodyear 195/50/15's,,cutting edge at the time. I had a blast luring cars after me on exit ramps . It wasn't straight line anymore. So although some dark times because of what was left behind from the 60's and 70's but other areas were explored and today we seem to have the best of both worlds.
I find it a very interesting chapter as the automakers had to change so quickly in all aspects of design and the life of the company many times depended on it. Many failures for sure but the evolution is what we have today ,like it or not.
 
Dark in a ways yes, in 83 Buick further developed the 231 turbo 6, and new cars (at the time) got fun and interesting again.
 
I traded my Shelby Charger Turbo for an 85 Mustang GT. The 5.0 graze was in full bloom at that time. The darn things where everywhere. Yes the Turbo Buick GN was quicker but a lot more expensive & with lower production numbers they where hard to find. There was a dealer that had about 30 used 5.0 Stangs & 10 or so 5.0 IROC's. So I stopped in after work. Picked out a nice grey 5 speed 5.0 Stang. It was a better car than the Shelby in every way except gas mileage. That Mustang was fast & did killer burnouts.
 
Don't blame ya C body Bob. It was a V8 and rear wheel drive too.
More trivia. What was the fastest american production car of 1986?
 
I remember the 442s and tpi IROCs. Both were lots of fun in their own way. Never got in the GNs, but the t- type was readily available [had color choices] and cheaper, still have my eye out for another one of those. It was a great sleeper in those days , The black GN was easy to spot and stay away from.
