This is my 1971 Sport Fury, it’s gone through a full restoration. What I’m trying to determine; did it have factory stripes or black side mouldings instead?

First off; I bought the car from an estate sale, previous own had no close family and the car had been repainted VERY poorly at some point. I sanded everything down and primed it but found no evidence of the mounting pegs that my 70 fury iii had for side trim.

The fender tag clearly reads “V5X” which either means;

- black side moulding
- black vertical stripe

There hasn’t been a definite answer if this is correct.

My broadcast sheet has a “6” in the stripe section but the fender tag does not list strobe stripes... can anyone tell me if this car did or did not have stripes? I’ve contacted the FCA and historic division with little luck other than them sending me an options list showing some 71 Sport fury’s came with JUST vertical strobes and not hood strobes anda phone call saying “it’s a good possibility”.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, I’ve never seen a Sport Fury with stripes aside from ones people have put on the make GT clones.

It would not have had strobe stripes unless it was a sport fury GT. Your car is a standard sport fury that had the side protective moldings with the black rubber insert. I attached your de-coded build tag for your reference. You also have late model police wheels on it which were not stock for this year sport fury. This year sport fury did not use side mounting pins for the belt moldings. There should have been holes in the fenders for plastic clips that would have held the moldings in place.
See corrected tag de-code below, the one here is not correct (48PDF)

You can also see the box V5 to the left of the burn mark has an X in the box indicating V5X just like the tag.

thanks for doing that. but I think you hit the "G" instead of the "H" when you entered the VIN data. It came back as a Taxi. ;)

I understand that it lists “X” under side mouldings. The only issue I see with it is that it ALSO lists something in the stripe section. Also the vertical stripes were available on the 71 Sport Fury as an option without GT callout, I confirmed this with FCA.

The 71 mouldings used rivet style tabs, not holes. I had a 71 parts car that had it as well as a 70.

I put the cop wheels on. I have both the hub caps and road wheels.

The question was to clarify why it lists both mouldings and stripes. All my other build sheets lists one or another, not both. I attached an example from another members car.

The only issue I see with it is that it ALSO lists something in the stripe section. Here’s what I tried to do to answer the question. The order guide lists a rear bumper appliqué under the molding section. My feeling is you may be seeing the code for the appliqué in the STRIPE section. I do not have any sheets from PH29 cars to confirm this line of thinking. I would look for sheets from PH29 cars built about the same time from the same plant to confirm this line of thinking.

The code in your STRIPE box is referring to something other than V6*. Without a clean sheet, we don’t know what that is. Also your 6 is showing up in the second box. The sheets we’ve seen coding V6 show up in the first box. Given the color of the car and deterioration of the sheet, that “6” could be a “G” indicating another green decal/stripe of some sort.

This thread is exactly why finding and saving tag, BS and WS information from C bodies is so important. The number of cars built was lower than Other styles and C bodies are more easily discarded meaning the documentation is lost. So saving any documentation from remaining examples is important.

Also the vertical stripes were available on the 71 Sport Fury as an option without GT callout, I confirmed this with FCA. True but not germane to this thread. We’ve already established this car has V5X. V5X and V6* are mutually exclusive.

Just copied this from I what posted a short time ago on the thread for the $35,000 Sport Fury. Please expand the quote.

Konner,

The second box from the end of line 3 would contain the stripe code but in your photo, there is a "blob" over that box. Maybe you can see through the blob in person or carefully clean it off. If your car came with body side moldings, they would be indicated in the 10th box on line 9 of the broadcast sheet right next to box 9 for belt moldings, which has a correct "1" in it indicating you car was belt with belt moldings, which all Sport Furys had.

The stripe code should be V6X. Could the 5 on your fender tag possibly be a 6? My non-professional but time consuming analysis of your broadcast sheet is that your car was NOT built with body side moldings.

I used the site below to help decode the broadcast sheet.

I forgot to add that mistakes do happen on Fender Tags. In my opinion, the build sheet confirms that your car was NOT built with body side moldings given the lack of any code in the line 9 box where a body side molding would be indicated. There may be a correct code in the stripes box on line 3 under the stain.

My car (1970 Fury) has the same codes on the fender tag (V5X) and build sheet (X in V5- box) and no sign of stripes. However, the two stripe boxes to the right of the V5- box are blank. I think the paint is original on most panels.

If you click the link to the broadcast sheet website in the in my post above (that was one of several that I looked at), scroll all the way to the bottom to stripes. Granted, this sheet is for a '71 Super Bee but note that the stripe box on the broadcast sheet only lists 6X. I posted the link here:

Jeff, There is a big difference here between 70 Furys and 71 Furys when it comes to stripes and V5- indicates body side moldings.

Geez, all of this arguing over stupid codes...you Sport Fury guys are starting to sound like the E body crowd!

If this Sport Fury had black body side moldings, wouldn't you usually be able to see some evidence of filled in holes on the back side of the fenders or even some portions of the quarter panel, or maybe even at least one on the door? Even though there were those tiny posts or stands to which the plastic clips attached to mount the trim, there was usually at least some clips mounted using holes in the sheet metal for a more secure attachment in my experience. Pull out one wheel well and look closely or maybe look carefully at the rear of the long quarter panel, as almost always there were some holes to mount those metal moldings.

And since the "code enforcement" experts on this site can't agree, make it the way you want and say that you sided with the expert you prefer on the outcome. Who would argue with you? It is a 29 roof, so it isn't a GT anyway, so few would question it anyway.
