Old Man with a Hat
Continuing the thread that started going way off the rails thread...
Down the coast, J-body style
↑But unlike the useless bratty rich white kids surrounding us, this dude was a Mexican with actual tools. When his jump box didn't cut it (I suspect it was suspect), he just started pulling the battery out of his own car, barrio-style. With this the mighty-Mirada fired up and we swapped our batteries. I shoved a fitty in his shirt pocket as he was leaned over replacing his battery.

Thank you for posting that incident. Your experience matches what I continually see out here in terms of Mexicans who go out of their way to be responsible, capable and decent individuals while many of the white guys are useless and couldn't care less.

Like any stereotype, they're broad brush strokes. I don't think you'll ever see me running down any particular group as "the problem". On the this issue, it's obviously in the news because our President has actually addressed it, vs. just kicking everything down the road like every leader before him.
So it's fitting to quote what he said that kicked it all off: “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
Now some people absolutely wet their pants over this, but two things occurred in my head when heard it.
1) it stuck me as exactly the same way most normal people (i.e., non-political) speak. Here is something bad... "Lean burn is garbage..." and then you recall some mitigating factor "...I mean, they were trying to do the right thing..."
2) it was a less-polished version of what my friend and boss (last name Gutiérrez) was telling me 18 years earlier at the Arizona Proving Grounds... Essentially the Mexican Government uses the United States as a dumping grounds.
Yes, many hard working, good and decent people do come across trying to escape a corrupted Mexican Government; just as you might find a '73 Monaco body tossed out for scrap. But allowing an un-vetted flow across the border isn't solving a problem either. Do you think the Democrats would be throwing their arms around them if they were all devout anti-abortion Catholics? Would the US Chamber of Commerce give a rat's a$$ if they were all demanding a "living wage"?
That's why this issue has been brushed aside for 40+ years.
