Took the 1966 Newyorker 4dr to the dragstrip today

Every one hundred pounds is a tenth
What are you spinning the RPM to? Did you try different shift points?[/QUOT

I added 500 rpm to the launch (2500 rpm) that made a huge difference. I was not looking to see the shift points, it was pulling hard at every shift. It does go thru the lights at ~4700 RPM.

Aha! So there's a few tricks left up the sleeve!:steering:

I have other tricks also

Actually adjust the cal-trac bars

Look at the jets in the carb it is WAAAAYY rich ( i never jetted it out of the box--- just bolted it on)

Actually determine how much timing I can run.

With more gear you would definitely get into the 11 second range. What you are running now is EXTREMELY impressive.

The Flyin' Whale ('66 300 2 door) puts out 500 HP at the rear wheels and a prior owner (Henry) ran low 12's in that car with significant traction issues with 295/50/16 BFG T/A radials, which are not the greatest tire for drag racing. I hope to get the Flyin' Whale to the track soon, maybe next month, to see what it will do.
I would love to be there! Are you going to run at New England Dragway on a street night? Please shoot me a PM a few days before you intend to go. I'll bring one of my 300s to cheer you on!

Sorry but no. Shooting for Lebanon Valley on May 12th (I think that's the date) in West Lebanon, NY.

Do you have a dyno sheet on it? I would add a few hundred rpm to highest peak number. Otherwise do laps adding 2-300 till it falls off, same with timing do laps adding 2° till it falls off.

No dyno sheet. I can only vary the upshift points plus or minus a few hundred RPM total. I will do a max timing run a couple degrees at a time soon.

What about a 518 swap? You could have 3.73s out back and be about even on the 2.76 cruising gear equivalent.

No video up yet, I was waiting till I go 11.99, then video one of those runs

1.No decent affordable converters.
2.Bell housing workarounds are questionable and $$$
3. Govenor control is a PITA
Truly you are better off adapting a 480L trans. they have more support in the aftermarket and are a real 4 speed not a add on overdrive like the 518

I’ve looked and been unable to find an adapter plate, but I’m sure they’re out there. One advantage of the 4L80e is that at least one of he fuel injection options has the capability of running that transmission.

I also like the true four speed idea.

If memory serves, the od ratio is easier to work into actual driving. It’s a .25 rather than a .29 (I think).

Sorry to hijack the thread though!

Someone needs to make a stand alone controller for 8 speed. Ford, GM, and Ram are all using basically the same trans in trucks now so it could be .Made to work with all three. Lottsa gear transmissions will make your time better also, staying in the thick of the power band.

I thought about a 4l80E, but I cannot seem to find anyone who has done the swap in a c-body, i dont want to have to beat on the tunnel to get it to fit. I think it "should" fit, but it would be nice to hear about someone doing a c-body swap.

I have know idea. The 460L would probably go in a C body with no more than a ding for lines and servo but a 480 is bigger turbo 400 over turbo 350 kind of idea. I think they both come with removable bell housings now. I would not put a 460L behind your engine, it will not live very long even with the Z pack in 3-4 clutch.
The 8 speed if they made a controller for it would definitely need tunnel surgery, too fat at the rear.

The 4L80E is a great trans. My 3500 HD has one with 375,000 miles of hard use. Had to do one thing to it, was to weld/lengthen the reverse servo pin, but it was really simple.
In a car, even a drag racing barge, I doubt you would be capable of hurting it.
You could slap in some gears and have the best of both worlds.
Would be a cool swap for sure.
