Swedged stud, hub, drum removal

I am requesting help in swapping front drums on my '69 Fury. I need to swap out my finned 11x3 drums for some smooth drums. I have searched the forums on here and cannot find a procedure for a way to remove the swedged studs in a manner to prevent damage the hub. I have new drums and studs and I bought a 5/8" hole saw to attempt to cut the swedge off. If I am successful in cutting off the swedge, do I press the lugs or the hub out first?

There is a tool called a swedge cutter.
The hub should be free once the studs are removed, and most people just pound them out, however, I used a swedge cutter.

New studs are supposed to be swedged onto the hub and drum once installed, but most people don't.

Thanks, I'm sure I can get the old studs out, even if I have to cut and grind then flush to the drum. I just don't want to damage the hub. I like to do things the right way, but often get impatient. My local machine shop does not have a swedge cutter and told me to cut the studs of flush then they can press them out.

I've done that too with a dremel tool.

Cutting flush may not do it. If any swedge is left it will enlarge the holes in the hub. You need to cut off the Swedge and it goes deeper than flush. Also drill a hole in the center of the stud so it will callapse in on itself instead of make the hole bigger.

You can still buy those. I think HF even sells one. Or, it may have been in the Grizzly catalogue where I saw it.

I have a arbor press similar to that one, missing the bottom plate and the piece for pressing, I used it for u joints.

Thanks for the help. Here's where I'm at now. I used the 5/8" hole saw in my drill press and drilled around each stud about an 1/8" into the old drum. The hub came out with a light tap. I knocked the studs out of the hub with a hammer. They came out easily. Now my studs appear too big in diameter to press into the hub.

I assume you're talking about your new studs. Check with the parts store by taking your old studs in and comparing them. The studs should fit in the hub holes very tightly, and they should have knurling on them to help seat into the holes. They should press in with some effort.

Yes, I mean the new ones. They are definitely larger than my old ones. I ordered them from rock auto Wagner BD61253 for front 11" drums. They have a .650 knurl. I will try to take the old one to the local store as you suggest. Thanks
