i have been putting off pulling my instrument cluster out so I can fix the gas gauge, interior lights and clock. Well today I paid for it I ran my wagon out of gas and had to wait 1 hour to get a gas can. Really stupid!

I had a GF back in the 1970's that use to run out of gas all the time and her gas gauge worked. After the 2nd time I told her to call her Dad because I wasn't going to deal with her anymore.

My older brothers were notorious for running low on gas. They would bring Dad’s car home at night on empty. Until Dad ran out of gas at 5:30 am on the Lodge Fwy. at Wyoming. I missed that sit-down talk! And the kicker is they both had one of Dad’s gas credit cards.

I don't know if I have a working fuel gauge in any of my old vehicles! Only ran out of gas once, and I knew I should have filled up before I went out.

I always filled the Lincoln's before a drive, when we stopped at a gas station during a cruise and once home again just to be sure. At least you weren't in a fuel injected vehicle which you wouldn't have been able to restart until the Injectors were primed.

Ah, well you're lucky then as I know my Fords won't restart without priming the injectors, best wishes with your car.
Another innovation thanks to the people's republic of California. Made gas cans a PIA so they do not vent all those unburned hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. www.ezpourspout.com makes a replacement spout that actually works with a screw on cap. These are not CARB compliant, so you probably can not buy in California. For the rest of us, it is a good way to get rid of the useless CARB spout. I bought several.

I’ve done it twice (knock on wood), in the dead of winter in CT. .. and yes, both times as a result of a known bad gas gauge.

Very true. The non vented gas jugs (it’s no can anymore) wheezes and glugs as it starves for vented air. We had an idiot deliver a brand new reach lift to China Lake NAWS and as I was one of the few with the badge to get on base guess who had to go fill er up. It took 45 minutes to put 15 gallons in and by the time I was done my arms were on fire. It might not sound that bad but keep in mind the last 5 gallons only took a few seconds when I stabbed that damnable jug !!!
Those earlier Ford FI fuel systems also had a switch in the trunk to re-trip if the car got bumped or was in an accident. Cut the fuel to decrease fire risk, in that case. Later FI vehicles don't have that. "Extended crank time" means the filter is clogged or the pump is getting ready for permanent vacation. But many modern diesels have a primer pump on the filter housing.

A friend had several A-body cars, usually Darts. One evening, as we coasted into a gas station, he commented that they'd all "run out of gas while showing 1/8 tank on the gauge". He said it'd happened to him many times over the years.

I once coasted into a station, car sputtering, coughing on fumes on a trip from Tampa to Tallahassee (75-10). I did the classic assumption that I had enough gas as I passed the last gas station exit before my final exit. That got my blood pumpin...moron..Lesson learned, never assume I have enough gas.

I keep a 2 gallon can in the back, just in case. Has came in handy once when running pretty close to a station. How is the fuel injection on the car? How do you like it?

Nope. Got a few extra cans at yard sales for a buck or 2 a piece...
Yes we will be looking at garage sales for gas cans, i'm told you still can get Racing gas jugs with the correct spout

To those not familiar with the Detroit area, this would have been a rough neighborhood even forty years ago. Here, I'll reference the movie "Grand Canyon"; when Kevin Kline's Mitsubishi breaks down in a similar situation.
I can confirm this tendency: it happened to me (and other family members) while driving our 1966 Dart GT. At the time, I was at Van Dyke & 6 Mile Road (see above movie reference).
