Rear speaker(s) questions for Convertible

Does anyone have photos of the factory rear speaker and how it's mounted?
One of the previous owners appears to have cut a hole in the back panel behind the seat and also messed up the mesh in the seat back. It looks like there's a metal frame in front of the fiber board panel to mount a speaker. Does the factory speaker fire backwards into the top boot?

Who ever did the installation tried to cover up the seat debacle with carpet and used duct tape to hold said carpet over mesh, along with using emblem to hold things in place. All that has failed.

So if you convertible owners could either show me your setup or if someone has a parts manual break down, that would be very helpful!

The usual speaker arrangement on a Mopar convertible is a single speaker at the top center of the rear seat. There will be a chromed or painted metal frame with mesh at that location. The speaker faces the front of the car. The speaker usually mounted in a heavy fiber or cardboard panel that ran along the top of the rear seat (Rear speaker mount panel) that was attached to the backside of the rear seat under the seat fabric. The FSM is not helpful in this regard as there is generally no photos of the speaker or mounting system. Someone is reproducing those panels but I do not remember who. Some other member might chime in. Type and year of the car is needed for parts reference.

In the opening the mounting holes for a standard 6x9 speaker should be there. Mine was open when I got it, not sure what, (if anything covered the whole when new). I used a reproduction speaker that gives decent sound, I have an OEM AM/FM that I found and it came with the factory dash fader switch and wiring harness. I bought a foam speaker baffle to cover the back of it. I can send pictures of the whole thing if you want.

It's a 1966 Polara 500.

Anything that shows the completed assembly would be great. I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of this obnoxious hole. My car is factory with an AM radio and the front speaker.

The front side isn't the issue. It's whatever is on the back side and in the boot area.

Before I cause more confusion, I will take a photo of what is in the boot area.

Here’s a few pictures of my 69 fury convertible’s new rear speaker I installed. I used a press board to cover the back of the speaker with a hole in it so the speaker magnet could poke through because my original plastic part was brittle and broken up. I used weatherstripping to line the hole so the speaker did not vibrate on it. I know it’s not original but The Back of the speaker is never in view, when my top is up my boot covers it and when my top is down my boot Is covering the roof . I used a dual voice coil custom auto sound speaker so both sides of my stereo ( left and right ) go into one speaker .

I went to a arts and crafts store called Michaels and used a very stiff compacted cardboard, it’s the same stuff they use in a edging of a picture frame. It’s called Mat board. For my use it worked well. You can cut it with a box cutter knife or razor blade. ABC Moparts Makes the seat back for my back seat speaker area , maybe he makes one for your car .

Here are some pictures of my speaker trim and mount when I was working on it. I replaced the badly beat up aluminum cover with some new perforated stainless steel material that I picked up at local specialty metal shop and trimmed it to fit into the chrome trim. I left the stainless unpolished because I liked the way it looked in the chrome trim with the chrome Plymouth emblem on it. I then removed what was left of the argent paint from the trim for repaint but I liked the contrast of the the chrome against the stainless steel so much I decided to leave it that way.

When I had the dash pad off to fix a few things I mounted a new dual voice coil speaker in the dash as well . The old girl sings pretty good now

@Welder guy, the stock cover for the rear seat does have a bulge to accommodate the speaker, do you think the upgraded speaker you used would have fit?

Yes no problem , the speaker would fit with plenty of room to spare. My bulge was broken off of mine so I just went flush because it was easier to do. You would have room to build a good speaker box just make sure any box you build doesn’t interfere with the roof mechanism when it’s down.

Here is a picture of how it looks in my 68 Fury III convertible. I bought a speaker and fader kit (original) and mounted it as described in the manual. It was a cover over the speaker hole before of the same material as the back of the seat.

I also have a 68 Sport Fury convertible and when I bought my car in 2004 it had just 45,000 miles on it and was almost all original. Having been owned by an elderly couple from 1999 to 2004 they somehow managed to bang up the right front, so the passenger side fender and headlight trim have been replaced. All else is still 1968, including even the top. When I got my car the original cover on the back seat speaker was still there, but just barely. It was black and made of very thin plastic and it was very brittle due to the passage of time and exposure to the sun. I tried to repair the cracks around the mounting screws at the top (only, none on the bottom), but each time I touched it, it crumbled. Literally crumbled. I was bummed, but I have not seen any other rear seat speaker covers anywhere and since about 2006 the rear speaker in my car has looked just like Swefury's car. If anyone knows where to find a replacement plastic cover I would be interested in knowing. Thanks.
