440 Stroker Assembly Ideas

Turbo,

As it currently stands, I am torn...right now I keep going over in my mind the Cam/Rear Gear/Torque Coverter combination and I can't decide where to go. Especially given that this engine will be going in a 4000lb. land yacht. I am guessing that picking the cam should be my first order of business and then build around that? I have a stock 2.73 rear gear and I kinda like how she cruises well at highway speeds. Especially since there are no stoplights where I live. Ultimately if I want to swap rear gears, can't I just deal with that after the engine is built and in my car? I am trying not to tackle too much at once.

Keeping that in mind, it brings me back to the Cam/Torque Converter combo question. I liked our earlier back and forth idea of building the car more towards torque and letting horsepower fall where it may. On top of that, which cam and torque converter stall should I be looking into? I have a stock converter now, and I am thinking that with the Trickflow 240 heads I am going to get, I should be looking at a 2500-3000 stall converter? And as for the cam, I'm not sure which range I should look at and I'm still torn on the Roller/Flat Tappet argument. I keep hearing Flat Tappets are dangerous after 6000 rpms and I don't think(?) this car will sniff 6000 rpm's, at least not consistently. So does that mean, stick with a flat tappet and a lower RPM range? I know around 65mph I am right about 2000 rpm's, which has me thinking either 1500-5800 or 2000-6000 for a cam range?

As for the carb, I was going to look at an 800cfm Edelbrock or possibly a Street Avenger (used to have one I sold). Intake, I was thinking the RPM Performer rather than a Single plane, mainly for that low end power, but I am open to input. I know I am all over the map, I just don't want to purchase a bunch of parts without having the right combo first. This car will never see a drag strip or track. It's a cruiser, I just want it to be a fast cruiser.
 
I went through the torque converter dilemma. In the end I found a shop near me that makes converters and left it to them. They wanted all my car and engine specs and drive expectations and they built the converter to deal with it. I’m not on the road yet, so we will see. I am glad that I let them figure it out, because they said its not so easy to put 600 ft lbs of torque in a 4300 lb car without a custom converter and have it cruise and take off right. I guess if you go with a 2500 stall converter of the shelf, that doesn’t mean much because it was probably meant for a Chevy Nova, not what we got.
 
I had A1 build me a 2800 stall. I think it was $550. It is unnoticable on the street, cruises at highway speeds, and absolutely catapults the car if you launch it.

MEV what intake manifold and carb you run? Any hood clearance issues?
 
My machinist said "the torque converter is where the magic happens" He said to not screw around and when the time comes to call ATI ,tell them all the specifics of the car and build and style of driving and let them make one up. He said it would be rather expensive but worth it. From my limited understanding a torque converter will stall at different rpms based on rear ratio ,car weight and torque produced by the engine so one stall does not fit all. Correct me if I am missguided
 
That's what my guy said. It wasn't too expensive for me as this place builds a ton of them for all applications.

Performer rpm with a quick fuel ss830. It is VERY close to the hood. I have an aircleaner assembly with the most amount of drop in the base plate i could find.

The guy at A1 wanted all of my info as well car weight, engine size, gear, cam specs and built my converter based on those numbers. I told him i thought 2500 would be fine, he said 2800 was his recomendation. It works great.

MEV, yes, that is what I'm looking for, thanks for the input. I guess I will have to go that route with the Torque Converter. Now it's back to the cam quandary. So with the RPM manifold, I am thinking that 1500-6000RPM range is what's best for the cam right? Did you go with roller or flat tappet and what kind of heads did you go with?
 
Mev is running a roller and I am having one custom ground also
 
I am going to research the Edelbrock Performer RPM again. I called Holley yesterday about the Dominator single plane intake as it sits low. They did not recommend that for my build and even mentioned the Edelbrock name to go with! They said we have nothing to offer you for your situation. Well they're honest I guess. Performer specs say 1.75 inches taller than stock. With the Mancini one inch drop air cleaner base that can still accommodate my dual snorkel on top I may have a fighting chance.

I am running a hydraulic roller from straub technology. Chris is a great guy and his cam is spot on for my stroker. I have posted the specs here in another post. I have the 440 source stealths. I initially ran them out of the box stock, and later had them cnc ported by modern cylinder head.

Awesome stuff, thanks again MEV. The Stealths were my initial choice, but I think I'm gonna save up for the Trickflow 240's instead. I know it's more, but I love the way those puppies look.

For a short time i ran a stock aircleaner, unported stock stealth heads and the stock log manifolds.....the car ran 12.80's in that configuration. I dont know what the Trick flow heads actually flow, but i posted my actual flow numbers here in another post so you can compare the flow at lift #'s and get an idea in comparison. (Dont just look at flow @.750 lift) look at flow across the lift range.

Good tip! I think my first purchase will be the cam, then build around that. After I get that, I will update with pics.

If you are going with an off the shelf grind that will be fine. The guy who ground my cam used my actual flow numbers when he ground the cam. I dont know if it makes a big difference, but it cannot have hurt.
