66 Sport Fury-From The Beginning

OK I know it's the 4th of July but I've got the bug pretty bad.
After spending the last two days mowing and trying to beat back Vietnam with the weed whacker I caved!
I got all over heated working the yard this morning and fired up my little Ryobi battery powered fan in the boatel and went to work on the VIP rear end....
Only took a couple of hours and it's out and setting on the work bench.
Saved all the drum brake stuff and now I have to decide if I'm gonna go all out on this housing or just swap the sure grip and spray paint the rear in the Vert?

OK back from vacation with the grandbabies at the lake and back to work on the car.
Finally got the rest of my parts for the motor delivered this week. Still cant finish off the motor until I receive the large bag of bolts I ordered from ARP. I found the bolt sizes on a thread on the A body forum that was very helpful! Also picked up a set of KYB's for the rear and stock length shackles-tryin to get the rear end out of the air.

Our office closes early on Fridays in the summer so I put the time to good use and continued taking the parts car apart. Managed to remove the trunk lid, rear lights and the rear wiring harness since I'm having trouble with the lights on the vert. You never know, that harness may come in handy!

The plan is to spend the weekend removing as many usable parts off of the parts car as possible.

OK sorry but no pics on this update....
Still removing stuff from the parts car. I'll be listing some misc stuff for sale as soon as I find time. The owners of the property where I'm renting the garage have a wedding planned for the end of the month so I'm under the gun to finish my chop shop operation and haul the shell off since it's happening outside the garage.

Pulled the trigger at Vans on an entire new gas tank package (tank, straps, pad, sending unit, etc) this morning and have a buddy planning to help me do the swap when it arrives. I'm thinking next weekend.

Great progress. One thing that may or may not apply to your tank from Vans: I got a new tank from Vans two years ago that had bad solder joints where the vent tubes attach to the tank. If your tank has a similar problem, it would be easy to make a simple repair / re-solder, before you install the tank and fill it with gas. I did a JB Weld repair to mine, and it ain't working too well. . .

I'll be sure to check it out! Thanks!

BTW, I cant wait to get a little pressure off so I can finish putting the motor together and unveil it with all of the cool stuff Leanna worked up !!!

and while we have the car up in the air, I have some new shocks and leaf spring shackles to install!!

I know I've mentioned it before, but that guy in Connecticut is advertising 66 Sport Fury parts again with "any part you can think of" in the heading of the ad. I don't know the seller, but I think its worth one final mention.

But, like you, I'm in the Winchester, Virginia area, and don't want to drive to Connecticut. All I would be interested in would be the 383 engine and trans for my 67 Belvedere wagon. Don't need anything for my 66 Sport Fury.

I am enjoying all your posts on all the work you're getting done on your Sport Fury. I would love to see it some time. Your work is moving along rather quickly, but I guess it won't be back on the road in time for the Mopar show at Miller Chrysler Dodge in Martinsburg WV on Sept 15th.

My 66 Sport Fury has been off the road for a year since I had to have it towed home after stopping for gas on the way to the annual car show at the drive in theatre in Stephens City, VA last September. Turned out to be a bad wire on the distributor. But, after sitting for a year, the old Stromberg 2 bbl carb had issues too. Just gotta bolt on a remanufactured carb that's been sitting in the box from Summit Racing for a couple weeks now.

Not sure I understand your post correctly, but if you need a '66 383 engine, I have one. The engine is pretty complete and is on a stand in Frederick, MD.

Yes, as a matter of fact I am looking for a complete 383 or 440 (and trans) to put in a 67 Belvedere wagon project that will be going into the body shop in a couple weeks. If I'm going to rebuild a motor for it, I would rather not rebuild the 318 (since its not the original one to the car). Frederick is only about 45 minutes away from me. I was going to message you directly so that I wouldn't be high jacking this thread, but your message box is full.

Sorry about the full mailbox. I'll attend to it right now.

Jim, If you don't mind me asking, who's doing your body work/paint?

John Bowers on RT 340 south of Berryville. He did my turquoise 68 Barracuda convertible a couple years ago, did my buddy's green 69 Dart convertible last year, and most recently did Dickie Wolfe's black 68 Charger (which was the one at Carlisle this year that looked alot like the Charger from the "Bullitt" movie.). Many years ago, he did Dickie Wolfe's 66 Fury convertible (after being rescued from "farm use" status), and it still looks good. John has a waiting list. To get my wagon (which is already disassembled) in there fairly quickly, I had to have him take it in place of another one of my cars.

OK all of the new gas tank stuff arrived from Vans. Tank, pad, sending unit, straps and bolts.
I have to go check out a new hunting property this weekend and my friend who screwed up and volunteered to help is tied up so it looks like next weekend we'll R&R the tank. If this doesn't correct my fuel delivery problems, it'll be new electric fuel pump time.

I've managed to remove a few more things from the VIP parts car and shortly it will be heading to the crusher.

The rest of the bolts arrived from ARP so I'm piddling around with the motor trying to do all of the bolt on stuff in my spare time.

If you run short of Mopar hardware in the engine bay, since you are in Winchester, keep in mind that AMK is in Winchester partially hidden by some trees, and not identified by any signs right across the road from the Winchester airport. I have gone over there many times for everything from bolts and studs for the engine, to windshield trim clips, to the stamped sheet metal nuts and special acorn nuts for holding on emblems and lettering. They are closed on weekends and from 12 to 1 for lunch.

OK it's the holiday weekend so my buddy who's helpin with the gas tank install is still MIA so after all the cookouts and pickin tomatoes and digging potatoes from the garden my grandson's and I went to work on the continuing saga of dismantling the VIP parts car.

It's in my yard now so SWMBO has attached a totally unreasonable timeline on when it has to go :( Evidently she has the rollback guy's number and is now dealing directly with him on schedules and such...… BTW when he moved to my yard he filled in the color line on the receipt as "rust bucket" ???

We managed to get both front fenders, the front bumper, and some misc. electrical components removed from the engine bay before the battalion of very large mosquitoes descended upon us at dark and shut the operation down...

More to follow!
