This car from the information provided appears to be relatively rust free, which is a much better start for a project. Has a dual diaphragm booster which suggests disc brakes. Would like to see photos of the underside and trunk floor to verify the condition. Appears to be a factory paint job. No information given as to the history beyond CHP and if the car still has the original 413, most of them were replaced at least once. Car also appears to be mostly unmolested as to modifications. Good start for someone who just has to have a mid '60's cruiser if the price is negotiable.

yes, if its solid and as clean as it looks, it would make a great sleeper or Adam 12 clone. Better yet if you could negotiate the $ down a few grand.

I'd love to see this in person, looks to be very original, the alternator is waaay out to the right, I think it's been changed out at some point.

It might have had a high output alternator initially that somebody replaced with a stock unit, in any case the adjusting bracket is too long for a stock unit. Not sure why the ford starter solenoid is mounted on the core support.

The ford starter solenoid is usually wired to the siren, but the core support is an odd location, time to do some research.

Some of the low profile units had a mini siren mounted forward of the core support instead of the light bar, suspect that is why the solenoid is where it is. This car appears to have an after market bracket with two holes next to the radiator, might have been for the siren also, although a very odd place.

Hopefully Alan or some other guru will chime in, I know my 72 WSP car had the siren located behind the grill on the left side. Interesting note, standard 65 Polara models used a 121" wheelbase but Police units used a 122" wheelbase, a requirement by the CHP.

No factory disc brake option until 1966, for the 4-piston caliper front disc brakes. The dual-diaphragm booster might have been fitted per CHP desires? UNLESS, CHP got a batch of the pre-production power disc brake cars for testing? Data plate picture would be interesting.

Looks reasonably decent, all things considered. Price would need some negotiation, I suspect.

Enjoy!

Bendix booster and disc brakes available as a police only option for '65 on the Polara, Chrysler and Fury cruisers. See section 5-100 of the '65 parts book.

Thanks for the 1965 information!

When I was looking for possible factory upgrades on my DH43N0D, in the Police section of the '70 parts book, there was a rear sway bar for C-body (Dodge in this specific case, I believe) listed as "LAPD Only". Didn't find it in any rear suspension parts illustrations, that I recall. At the time, Hellwig offered a rear bar for C-bodies, back then.

There was an LA option for the '70 police cruisers that tightened up the turning radius via a shorter pitman arm and modified steering linkage and tie rod ends, so called quick radius steering. As I recall, the PA valve on the steering gear was also different so as to give more boost for the tighter turning. Believe the rear stabilizer was part of that package, do not know if it was available as a stand alone option. Parts book for '70 should show part numbers for the modified items in the police section.

This is a genuine CHP car, I have seen it in person, the seller has done some work to it, it is as clean as it looks.
The CHP was using a mechanical siren that mounted on the frame below the alternator, the solenoid is for the siren.
At this time the CHP wasn't using roof mounted lights or sirens. If somebody is interested in this I would be willing to make the three hour (one way) drive to look at it more.

I saw it when I was verifying a 68 CHP car for somebody.

I wondered what the extra bracket next to the radiator on the left was for, now we know. Thanks.

Most of the CHP cars of that era were 383 equipped, would this have been an evaluation unit or did they run a mix of 383 and 413s?

Dave

This disc brake cars would have 15" wheels also, with specific 15" wheel covers. I have never seen the '65 version. Anyone have a picture?
I don't see power steering on this car. It does have the heater (option), and no radio.

Not sure but it certainly looks like Disc Brakes were specified as a write in option on the build sheet.

At the time, all I was interested in was the rear sway bar "find". In a prior CAR LIFE road test of a Charger R/T, there was mention that (while GM had embraced rear sway bar suspension packages at that time), Chrysler people felt the addition of a rear sway bar to an already stiff suspension (due to having to deal with engine torque at the rear leaf springs) would cause the car to oversteer in turns (due to too much roll-stiffness at the rear). Guess they got it figured out as the "Radial Tire Roadability" option appeared on '74 Road Runners (W23s and Goodyear GR70-15 white letter radials, with a rear sway bar).

I understand the Hellwig C-body rear bars mounted behind the rear axle? A friend used a first-gen Cordoba rear sway bar set-up on his '66 Polara 2-dr hardtop, having to heat and bend it for the narrower body mounting, but no other changes.

Enjoy!

Nope Adam 12 were LAPD not CHP, plus way before that programs timeframe.
Or were you thinking CHiP's of the late 70's?

Someone that doesn't know Mopars has been working on the car.
I wonder how long the springs have been that way?
