I just bought a two-door 1972 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham. The car appears to be in good shape but its vinyl top is dry-rotted and needs replaced. My initial plan was to order the correct material from SMS (which I have read is now the only game in town), get Legendary to cut and sew the top, and then have a qualified installer put it on the car.

Notwithstanding what their website states, however, a Legendary representative informed me that their Chrysler 2dr fuselage offerings end with the 1971's. She told me, furthermore, that the tops for the 2dr NYB and 2dr NYer differ in dimensions and sewing patterns -- something of which I was not aware.

I have looked at a number of pictures and, for the life of me, cannot see the differences. Could 1972 2dr NYer and NYB owners post photos of their original tops here? Thanks a lot!

Here are a few that I have found and believe to be original:

1. Regular NYer (other thread on the same car here in 2016):

Another one from Michigan in May 2020:

2. NYB:

Here is another one that was for sale in Pittsburgh -- exact same top as mine, BTW:

I am having a very hard time seeing any difference...

I have a white boar grain top that should fit.

Thank you Lea, that'd be great except the top on mine is gold (V1G code) and I plan to stay original. Here is Buttercup (her skirts are in the garage):

i think she maybe mis-informed..... but then i could be too

I've gone through several rounds of emails with her, and this Sunday (yes, she responded on a Sunday -- talk about customer service!) she told me it'd be 5-6 weeks after I get the SMS materials. Then this morning, after she'd checked yesterday, she gave me the bad news.

I don't know many 1972 Chrysler NYer / NYB owners on FCBO, but I hope that some past/current/future owners (and others too) will come out and chime in!

@Hotrodharbor (painted top), @kingbowl93 (sunroof), @oliver (originally painted roof), @moelicious

I had one a loooong time ago.

Michel, Give Kent's Auto Upholstery and ask for an est. If you got build sheet the color and type of vinyl grain can be determined. If you don't have the number, PM me.

nice car ayilar. congrats!

i dunno that exact answer to your question, but grain differences would seem to me to be the only likely difference. dimensionally i would be surprised if they were not identical between those models within a given year (unless a sunroof was involved or something obviously like that).

good luck!

Go to the 1970 Hantramck register website, look up library then in 1972 you'll find information on the available color and trim combinations including vinyl roofs

Hopefully there's enough information to answer your queries there.

I was looking for part numbers in the 72 parts manual but can't find it. Were vinyl tops not in the parts manual?

Good suggestion, the NY and NYB used the same colors and grain

Is that that boar grain above? Mine is different (73). EDIT: no, mine's the same.

I don't think there are any differences in the top size or pattern between NYs and NYBs.

Here are the measurements from my 73 NYB.... prepared exclusively for the fine folks at SMS. All dimensions are to the finished edges.

The image above is the '72 option, probably a different choice was offered in '73. Take a look at the website and see, since seat design and fabric options varied from year to year probably vinyl roofs did too.

From the materials I'd read, I thought that the vinyl type is indeed supposed to be the same "boar grain" in both the NYer and the NYB. The reason why I have not yet ruled out 100% a difference in dimensions (despite what my eyes tell me, which is that there is none) is because of the difference in the rear window opening on the Imperial -- Crown vs. LeBaron -- in 1969 and 1970. In other word, same car, different trim levels, different rear window opening were a possibility at Chrysler.

Once Buttercup is parked next to Ming (hopefully early next week), I'll be able to compare and confirm :)

Um, since no one else is sayin it, I gotta. You have a lot of gay names for your cars .... But they are yours .....:steering:

Thanks a real lot. I have a bunch of questions, for example how did you/they account for the radiuses, do you have pictures of the installation process, and what happened to the old rear window molding?
