2020 Woodward Dream Cruise cancelled by the promoters

We’ve known about this for some time now and they’re just getting around to turning it into a news story?:realcrazy:

Is going to stop the cruisers? Might be more like 1996 before all the private parties, sponsors and closed lots. I’ll be on Woodward a lot this year weeknights.

It's on the official website now. I think previously, a few cities were opting out of the special parking, activities, etc.
Guessing the vendor displays are gone too. (???)

Sure, nothing to stop anyone from driving down Woodward Ave.
Hmm, wonder what will happen to the spectators lining the streets??
Will that be allowed by local cities/cops??

Yes, no vendors anywhere. There’s been a growing discontent around this event for years now. I’d be willing to bet we’ve seen our last WDC as we have known it up to this point. I don’t see all of the communities getting back on board with it moving forward.

As someone not involved or from that area why has there been growing discontent for this event?
Just curious...
Unless you’re into classic cars it’s just a giant inconvenience for all the neighborhoods along Woodward. The noise, traffic, most retail/service related businesses with a Woodward address have no choice really but to close for that day. I could go on....

Same thing that happened here in Daytona Beach with 'Bike Week', when I first came to Daytona Beach it was about the motorcycles races at the speedway. The Daytona 200 motorcycle race was the biggest race in the USA plus about the only high bank track race left in the world. Now it's just a event for white people to act like ghetto clowns with baggers and ghetto glides with obnoxious stereos louder than the engine pipes. The only people that are for it are the ones that profit off it by selling alcohol, bike accessories and other junk Chinese trinkets or rent out properties for big dollars. Most all are what we term 'Itinerant Vendors' from out of state and there has been some questioning of whether they pay their dues so to say. (state sales tax, local permit fees etc) There was a crack down a few years ago, but can they really manage it, same with the fly-by-night contractors in this state, too many and not enough resources.

:soapbox:

A lot of big events, had been cancelled due to their size, crowd forecasts, etc., but some of the smaller ones, are able to continue.

It’s not like they’ve shut down Woodward Avenue. It’s a state highway.
All the carnival shows along the sidewalk and parking lots won’t be missed.
I mean the whole purpose of the thing originally was to help pay for a youth soccer field in Ferndale. That has long since been done.

So the towns can't deal with one days inconvenience?

The cruise has been “A Happening” for 26 years. Probably longer than many of the loudest complainers have been here. Their relatives bought homes down near the airport last year and now complain about the noise!

It’s grown to a week of cruising.
Lots of businesses complain about lost revenue.

And many make a boatload of money.
Many small businesses just close for the day and rent out their parking lot to car clubs.

"Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded."
"The food at that place is terrible; and the portions are too small," (As if you'd want more bad food).

Haven't done the Woodward Cruise in 7 years. We always go to Back To The Bricks in Flint, but that has been cancelled also because of CV-19. C'mon 2021

Lot of buddies go up to the Flint cruise instead also.
I might make a lap of Woodward on Saturday but prefer just to cruise weeknights after the small businesses have closed. More like the H.S. days when we just parked along Woodward listening to WRIF and watching other cars.
