Hello all,

I am looking to purchase an auto retrieval system (GPS type) for my 1966 Imperial Crown. I have been researching the LoJack system. I even email them requesting information, but I haven't received any response. Are they still in business? Things I am concerned about...I really don't want to worry about keeping a battery charged and / or a crazy monthly fee.

Please let me know what you think. Thanks!!

By "retrieval", I suspect you really mean "tracking"? There are many location monitoring systems around today. All you need is to install it on the vehicle and download the appropriate app for your phone and/or computer. No really big deal.

LoJack, last I knew of them about 20 years ago, was an incognito system which needed an appropriate receiver to intercept the LoJack signal. It was not a big "item for publication" at the time, but the local law enforcement people needed the special receiver in order to find the vehicle, purely by chance, it seemed. In comparison, GM's OnStar system was satellite based and could disable the vehicle, after an appropriate warning it would happen. BTAIM

There are many subscription services which cater to the various transportation industries, public and private. Real-time tracking, speed and location monitoring of multiple vehicles. Not sure what the buy-in price might be, but the monthly payments are not too bad, for a fleet. Possibly they have a "consumer" version?

On one of Hulk Hogan's reality shows, he was monitoring his daughter and her boy friend on their way to the beach. He called to request her to slow down a bit, as Hulk and his wife watched on their computer. LOL

Happy Shopping!

LoJack is still in business but check the location of certified installers. None in the Pittsburgh PA area, the closest I could find is Cleveland, OH. Looks like Farmington Hills, North of Detroit may be the closest for you.

I finally reached a Lojack representative who took the time to explain the system. There are only four counties in the Michigan that has the capability to track the LoJack system. So, if you pay the one-time fee for the system and your vehicle is stolen it will not send a "ping" unless it travels through a "covered" area e.g. those four counties. So, LoJack is out of contention...The research continues. Thanks!!

Yes, I am looking for a "tracking" system. I want it to be reliable, but a set and forget system (as much as possible) .

Still looking for options.

Thanks for the response!!

A hidden fuel shutoff works great. Car runs out of gas and stops running. Usually in a conspicuous place at a inconvenient time. Car is abandoned, cops pick it up and trace the owner.

That sounds like a great option!!!

Thanks for the response!!!

except a pro puts on a flat bed not drive it

To your point, my father used to say, "Locks only keep honest people out.", and that is true...But, I had a Criminal Justice Instructor in college who was retired FBI. The point of anti-theft devices is to make your target less attractive then your neighbors. As much as you can do to make it a PITA for someone to steal your ****, the better. Criminals in general are opportunists and lazy. they'd rather steal something easy then have to work for it. These points were reinforced during my years working for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

When I used to see the generic "This Vehicle Protected by ________", I used to almost laugh.

One of our Mopar club guys used to work for an accessory company that was doing some higher-end car alarm/security systems. Back then, when the vehicle was "violated", an alarm would go off and then reset a few minutes later. Some even had a proximity "radar" system so that they'd go off if you got close. In a design/enginering session, they pondered what sort of "alert" the system would use.

In that 1980s time frame, it was fashionable to use some sort of "music" rather than a siren or similar. One guy suggested a segment of the "Star Wars" theme. He said that everybody started to laugh, visualizing how that would sound on a busy mall parking lot.

Funny thing was that when one of those systems "went off", few if anybody paid it any notice. Waiting for it to reset. Usually, what was "in" one year was "antique" by the next year. PLUS finding somebody to do a quality install AND be able to troubleshoot and fix it a few years later.

Different times, back then . . .
