We gobble this **** up cause it's cheap. Walmart SUCKS. We did this to ourselves. Greed feeds greed. Can't imagine the pretty girl at the end with any future ,but in the USA they don't even have to try. Hand outs. Bummer

For example, workers in Shanghai made an average of RMB 9,723 (US$1,405) per month through the first quarter of 2019 – over four times the local minimum wage.
Minimum Wages in China 2020: A Complete Guide
How do US manufacturing workers compete with people who are making less that $18000/year? And that's 4 times the minimum wage. Executives and lobbyists make millions to put US workers at a huge disadvantage.

You tell me. I am as you are just stating facts

I guess we live with it cause it's cheaper, in our favor at the moment. Every man for himself=Walmart etc.

Interesting because many in the USA consider them suckers while they who make the products say the same of us.

I don't think it's that we "can't" it's because we won't. It is not made here because we don't want to pay the cost to make it here. What's sad is that there is stuff not even made in the USA anymore.

Agree. Made in USA is usually not a choice, not an option when you going to the average big box store or website.

Can't and won't is because there is no money in it for us in our present system. The result is the same.

China also uses a lot of slave labor, you do not have to pay those. Think detention center laborers like the Uyghurs. (Pronounced Weegers) and other out of favor groups such as political prisoners, Christians etc.

Boys and girls, its not Wal Mart. Wal Mart manufactures nothing.
It's the companies having the stuff made in China.
Why do they do this?
Its multi faceted, but we, the consumers have demanded we pay as little as possible for products.
Manufacturing moved offshore due to increasing restrictions, regulations and taxes here.
So they went elsewhere. We still demanded lower prices so the only way to make things cheaper is...make them cheaper, as in quality.
Wal Mart makes nothing, they only sell the stuff. They buy their products from the same places as any other retailer.

Agree or disagree,
Not sure why you are attacking Walmart on it's own here Turboomni since all retailers are doing this around the world.

Consider the Dollar stores that actually have a greater profit margin( more profitable) than Walmart are not relying on US made products other than the American's that built the facility/building the products are in but don't be surprised that the materials used for the structure may have come from over seas...

As I viewed the video, I asked myself how old this video actually is.
i am employed with a world wide organization and one sector is manufacturing. This looks pretty antiquated compared to what we produce but I can understand that there's this kind of manufacturing going on in the 3rd world.
Previous comments are pretty much right on about greed being a driving force behind this and lobbyist's are partly responsible for this.

But the bottom line IMHO is that we all don't want to give up our hard earned cash unless it's for something that we enjoy such as spending on our classic cars or other activities that we personally have decided it's ok to spend it on be it a hobby or fine wine & steaks every day.

This personal greed translates into us going to the stores and buying the cheaper products because the cost of the US made product which is not always better quality will be much higher due to the us believing that we deserve a higher wage.

This in itself is not wrong but inflation causes the increase locally with wages & employer health insurance being a huge reason for the higher costs.

If we had to rely on US made parts for our cars, then no one would likely be driving/owning one because the parts companies would not find it sustainable(profitable) to continue to make parts for out dated cars.
So we have to rely on overseas suppliers to make it for us.

I see it as it's the world we live in today so let's make the best of it & find the happy things in life be it be or small while we can & not focus on the negative.

Wishing everyone here all the best.
Take care & stay safe:thumbsup:

Research indicates that at one time, if you wanted to sell your product through Walmart, they would set you up with a Chinese company to do it at a price point they could sell cheaply. Their goal was to overtake K Mart, Sears, Wards, Hudsons, Korvette's, Arlans and put other regional retailers out of business.

One big thing that takes the money out of this country is the Japanese car business.
I don't want to hear about China taking jobs from a guy driving a Japanese car!!
(just said in general, not pointing out anyone here!!) Hypercritical!

Who here would work for BUCK AN HOUR, or less? How do you compete with that?

i pay as little as possible by buying second hand stuff. commercial/industrial where possible. better quality than new consumer grade, made in USA, and pennies on the dollar. old stuff will live longer than i will.

I agree Walmart and the like is the tip of the iceberg and is the most visible sign. It is not Walmart's fault as they are the dealer, they don't make the products. Just frustrating to me to see the way things are today in so many areas. Sorry bout the rant but with everything going on these days it's seems any number of problems could overwhelm society anywhere in the world.

Consumer demands for low prices mean ZERO. Offshore manufacturing is driven solely by profits and shareholder demands for....more profits.

Just the other day I was thinking that about a pair of jeans that I paid $30 for
Back in the 70’s I was paying about the same price

the jeans with inflation calculated should be about $138 in today’s dollars
I know the reason why they are only $30 still and its from off shore costs and no other reason

In a word, automation. The horse has left the barn for operating jobs in manufacturing in NA. I believe the tide is turning and manufacturing can return to NA albeit with heavily automated facilities. It will also require us here in NA to grow a pair and level the competitive playing field. Investment in automation will allow us to compete on the basis of quality while providing high paying jobs in maintenance and management. IMHO to make this transition the cost of "slave labour" and zero safety and environmental standards need to be factored into a meaningful tariff regime.

Why Automation Is Crucial To Manufacturing Resiliency

Automation has gotten rid of many jobs!
Unless you specialize in robotics!

Not long ago while i came across a old Atlas drill press at a local salvage company. To the untrained eye it looked like it was ready to be scraped, paint was peeling off it, the motor was bad and the spindle was seized from rust.
I saw gold and bought it for fifty dollars.
Mind you this press was pre WW2.
I got it free, lubed up the bearings and shaft and while it still looks like **** it works perfectly, heavy duty, no play, turns with no run out.
I had the exact same experience with a South Bend lathe I picked up some years back
Compare this press to any of the crap made overseas and I wonder what those new press's will look like in 70 plus years.
We made quality in this country and still can, we taught the rest of the world at one time, we rebuilt Japan after the war

Looks like they were making some Spacely Space Sprockets there.

You are 100% correct. Kids need to be going to their community college for electronics, instrumentation, industrial electrician and industrial mechanic. Equipment in industrial settings will continue to require scheduled maintenance and there won't be a robot in the foreseeable future capable of performing that kind of maintenance work.
